I chose Biba's based on the Trip Advisor reviews. In particular, I noted the recommendations that this was a good restaurant for a romantic couple's evening.
Biba's has a certain ambience that might best be described as European panache; however, romantic it was not. Quiet it was certainly not. The restaurant patrons on the evening we were there certainly enjoyed their dining, engaging in loud and boisterous conversation. This in itself says a great deal about the quality of the food and the conviviality of the environment.
But, what my companion and I wanted to do was share quiet, intimate conversation and enjoyment of one another while enjoying some fine Italian food. Biba's was not the place to do it.
Food was good, although I have enjoyed better at Italian restaurants in both Chicago and Los Angeles. Service was attentive without being overly fawning, which is always appreciated. The wine was good. I had a nice pinot noir; my companion a merlot.
Price was reasonable. We split a main dish and each had a salad, the latter which was remarkable for achieving a beautiful balance between simplicity and exquisite taste.
I would recommend Biba's unreservedly for a evening out with friends or a celebration. If you are looking for a quiet, romantic interlude, however -- look somewhere else.
