“Modern hotel in an historic setting - my favorite hotel in Sacto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2011

I've stayed at the Grand Sheraton three times, and all visits have been fantastic. The main floor is especially noteworthy because it is built within the shell of a 100 year old marketplace with 50 foot ceiling and glass clerestory windows. The lobby bar is a perfect place to stop for a martini and offers good food in an attractive environment.

The rooms have recently been updated and are now at the luxurious end of what you'd expect from a Sheraton (almost Westin quality). They have really cool window seats that are perfect for checking out the skyline or people watching on the streets below.

The prime downtown location is convenient to the state capitol grounds. Unfortunately, that means a high volume of business travelers on expense account and the room rates reflect that.

Room Tip: High floors have nice views.

This was my first trip to downtown Sacramento and, for some reason, I did not have high expectations.

The downtown area and the hotel definitely had a better energy than I was expecting and I will very likely be back.

My room was incredible (a corner suite). Some hotels market that they have suites but they really just throw a couch into a slightly bigger room. That was not the case here. It was an awesome room with a huge separate living area.

Only drawback is that it seemed like the hotel was not equipped with enough elevators for a hotel that size leading the a bit long waits (although maybe that was unique to this weekend).

I came here on a business trip conference that took place right next door to the Sacramento Convention Center, so I loved the convenience of rolling out of bed right into lectures/meetings. The room rate was $135/nt, and it was decently priced for the accommodations. Checking in took almost no time at all and my room was placed away from traffic/noise as requested. The conference was 3 days long, and I was the only occupant in a room with 2 twin beds. I had requested a King-sized bed, but they unfortunately ran out of those rooms at the time of check-in. The hotel is beautiful and they have a nice little gym and pool, but there were also a few downsides. Here are some pros and cons:

Pros:
1. Spacious rooms with a great sitting area (albeit not much of a view)
2. Clean, prompt service (except in case of faulty curtain, see con #1)
3. Coffee & tea in the rooms
4. Great lounge area to converse with colleagues and order some beverages/snacks
5. Wonderful restaurant recommendations by the concierge

Cons:
1. Faulty curtain in my room that I put in a work order for that was never fixed
2. Maid did not properly make the bed every day, so it became lumpy by night 2
3. WiFi for $10/day (there was a small area for free WiFi downstairs but not heavily advertised)
4. Liquor bottles at the bar were displayed in the windows, exposed to sunlight during the day. Any experienced bartender should know this damages the alcohol. (note: same bottles used for making cocktails)
5. TV in bedroom does not swivel, forcing you to sit right in front of it
6. No snacks in vending machines, only beverages (bad for those with late-night munchies)
7. $18/day for parking

There are more cons than pros because there is always more to complain about than to appreciate, especially when you pay twice the price of a motel. However, the Sheraton experience was lovely and I would recommend this place for any traveling businessmen. Apparently, the 2nd Saturdays are very exciting in this part of town, too. Since the Sheraton is basically in downtown, it would be a great choice to enjoy a nice weekend with good weather, food, and activities.

The hotel was truly the highlight of my Bar Exam experience. I know, that's not saying much, but the entire staff at the Sheraton truly cared about whether or not the students in the hotel did well. The staff accommodated special requests, made sure we were served quickly for lunch breaks, promptly responded to requests and made sure to wish us luck. I talked to a girl who had a complete melt-down after day 1 of the exam. Apparently, the person who answered the phone to schedule the wake-up call could hear it in her voice and had the kitchen send up a plate of fruit and some water with a note saying, "Don't worry, you'll do better tomorrow." They really cared. They also made sure to help people upload their answers. They really went above and beyond.

The rooms were comfortable, though the nerves of the exam kept me from really sleeping well. The desk was large and provided a good work space.

They have WiFI in each room, but unfortunately, they charge you for each device that you want to log on to the internet. So if you have more than one computer in your room, you'll have to pay for both. It was a little annoying because internet is $10/day.

The hotel is also right across the street from the Convention Center, so its very convenient for the Bar Exam.

I stayed here for one night for a conference being held at the hotel. Checked in before noon, my room was ready, on the 13th floor, good view. The rooms have been recently renovated, nice-updated decor with flat screen TV, comfortable bed and great shower. Location is great, good distance for restaurants. Food was good, staff was friendly, I don't know if I would pay a $200 plus rate to stay here. I paid a $145 conference rate. It was easy to hear noise in the hallways at night, was the only downfall. The normal parking rate is $18 p/day at the parking structure across the street.

Room smelled of cigarrette smoke. Billing was done incorrectly. Room service/dining staff were very friendly and provided excellent service. Had problems with 2 desk/registration staff, and was finally helped by a very good front desk staff member Rasheen Johnson. This will not be my first choice of hotel in the future.

We have stayed here many times over the past 3 years. We are Starwood Gold and this is the best place in Sacramento for using the benefits, so to speak. While the hotel is nice and functional, and the location is great, it is still a Sheraton.

Our one big issue with the hotel, a recurring one, is the way the hotel charges for internet services. The charge is per day and per device. So if you are like most of us, we have two computers and two iPhones. We can live with 3G on the iPhone, but to have to pay $40 per day for internet is off the hook. On this past trip, I mentioned that we are SPG gold, etc, etc and after publishing to Facebook and Twitter, the hotel chose to wave the fee for the second device. It really shouldn't come to this. High speed connectivity has become a part of life, and in my mind, it should be included in the room rate (something that Starwood has learned with several of their Westin and W properties).

So, stay here. Enjoy the location and proximity to the better of what Sacramento offers. But don't get ripped off on the internet charges. At check in, address it up front and roll the dice.
