Owner description: Local Roots Food Tours offers food and farm adventures throughout Sacramento and its beautiful valley region. We offer 3 different walking food and cultural tours in Sacramento. Going beyond the big city - our other walking food tour can be found in picturesque Murphys,CA. Murphys Food & Wine Tour explores the Queen of the Sierra - a wonderful mining town with 8 delicious stops including food and wine. Ranked #1 Tour in Sacramento by Trip Advisor. Each tour offers a large variety of tastings (10+), while visiting 6-10 different specialty food shops, artisans, and neighborhood restaurants. All of our tours are offered year-round, last between 3.5 to 4 hours and range between $42 - $70, depending on the tour. The tours focus on F.L.O.S.S. (fresh, local, organic, seasonal, and sustainable) foods and beverages. Enough food is served on each tour that most guests consider it a meal. Savor, learn, explore and connect to some amazing communities and their culinary dishes.

“Gourmet on K Walking Tour - "K"lossal fun!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

Joined this tour w/friends in early June & the whole experience completely exceeded my expectations. While I'd been to a couple places on the tour previously, the personal attention, food samples, and warm welcome from the restaurant owners made the visits so much more special and memorable. We all enjoyed the "K" St. history highlights from our two guides, who were both friendly and personable & who flexed well with our group. Highly recommend "Downtown & Vine" wine bar (extensive wine selection w/ the best of Amador, El Dorado, & local Ca. wines), "Tequila Museo Mayahuel" mexican restaurant (fabulous, unique nachos, appetizers, & luscious drink sample), and "Blackbird" restaurant (which has a great happy hour with $1 FRESH oysters & a great dinner menu). Have lived in this area for over 20 years & am happy to have learned about new things, new people, & new places to support. Fun way to spend an afternoon & be part of the Sacramento community.

“Food and wine Murphys CA”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

The tour guide was a delight. Lauren had a lot of history and interesting stories to share with us. The food and wine was wonderful and Murphys is a beautiful town to spend the day or weekend. We sampled food I would never had ordered at the V and it was delicious. Who knew you could spend so much fun time in an olive oil tasting room and spice store. The bakery was out of this world and the candy store had so many tempting candies that was delicious. I had a bag full that I treasured for the next day to nibble on. The winery, Val du Vino, was fantastic! The owners were delightful and wine was great. I took home a bottle of every wine we tasted. We had such a good sandwich (I will be back to have more of that sandwich) and a very good pizza as we continued our tour. We finished at the cupcake store. What can I say. The owner could have won on the "Cupcake Wars" on the Food Channel. Oh wait-she did! We had a wonderful time at Murphys, the tour was a great way to experience some of Murphys, and Local Roots was a great way to do it. Thank you to Lauren for a wonderful experience.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review of your trip to Murphy's. We agree that the little town has so much to offer. Spending a day with friends and family combined with delicious food (and sweets!) is wonderful. We hope to see you on another tour (maybe in Sacramento?)

“K Street tour not as good as the Origins tour”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

This is the second tour I have been on with this group. The first one ( "the origins of food") was AWESOME, so I was inspired to try this one when I had two out-f-town guests. The tour guide started late b/c she kept waiting on one person. We kept wondering - why does she not call or text him? They should have a strict policy of starting on time and simply texting the person where/how to catch up with us. The first three places we visted were GREAT and the food/wine was tremendous. But the last three were uninteresting to say the least. We had no interaction with anyone who owned or worked there and hardly any discussion of the significance of why the locations were chosen. One place, blackbird or something, many people in the group were complaining about the food to each other but did not want to hurt the tour guide's feeling so did not say anything. That being said, the first three places were great, but then it got disappointing so it felt like the tour needs a lot more work to be on par in quality with the other one I went on.

We appreciate your feedback and sharing your thoughts on how we can improve on our newest food tour route. Logistics and processes in any food tour are constantly changing to make sure the glitches and hiccups are continuously being worked out. Knowing you are a repeat customer and for the most part had an excellent experience on your first tour and the first half of your second tour - we are sorry you felt that part of the tour fell short of your expectations. Your feedback helps to make notes on where we can do better to achieve a 5 star review. Our Gourmet on 'K' is receiving some excellent reviews from the majority of our tour participants and have kudo'd the great food on the tour from start to finish so we feel the glitch might have been in the particular tour you were on on that particular day. We can never promise that each stop will have someone come out and speak to our groups - chefs and owners can get caught up in the kitchen/mgmt or might not even be present on a particular day - our hope is that participants connection is made from the food they experience, the stories and the people -sometimes that doesn't always happen. Communication between late tour participants and launching a tour is a tough one. We make every attempt to launch tours on time; however, what goes on behind the scenes is transparent to our participants and what circumstances our guides might be dealing with prior to the launch of a tour. Many times there is no way to contact the late arrivals and if guides know the first food stop is running behind, they might delay the launch of the tour slightly to make sure all parties are present and the food is nice and ready. Our goal is to stay on time and live up to ending on time for each and every tour we offer. Everyone has hiccups and nerves can get to the best of people but we try hard to train all our guides in the most professional manner. The tour guide on your particular tour has received nothing but 5 star reviews since she has started with LRFT so we feel it must have been just one of those bad hair days where not everything flowed correctly during the tour. Our goal is to achieve 5 star feedback on all our tours and we take every piece of feedback from our participants and try to improve on areas that are needing some tweaks. Thank you for your time.

“Gourmet on 'K' Culinary Walking Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

My wife and I took another Local Roots Tour. This time we took the one along K Street, which is the historic and now resurgent downtown main street of Sacramento. Ashley was our guide and took us to six restaurants, with samples of the foods and sometimes drinks at each one. The restaurants were a nice hotel restaurant, a wine-tasting bar -- with three wines to taste with cheeses, a wonderful Mexican place, a pastry store, an artistic bar/restaurant and finished with a dessert at an upscale sandwich and coffee place. All were good and the total volume of food was plenty. Ashley also gave us a historic review of K Street, including historic photos and drawings. We went in April, and the weather was great, but since the distances were not great and most of the time was indoors, this walking tour would be fine even if the weather wasn't wonderful.

“Fun and Delicious Day!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2013

I would highly recommend the Origins of Sacramento food tour, both to visitors as well as folks who live in Sacramento. We had a great time strolling the streets of midtown with the delightful Ashley as our guide, sampling delectable foods and learning some interesting facts and trivia about our town. We particularly enjoyed getting to talk to the chefs at the restaurants, learning about what it takes to source locally and aim for a farm-to-fork experience for their customers. The day was a perfect mix of wonderful food, a lovely walk through tree-lined streets, and a little education and history about the area.
