My husband was born and reared in Sacramento, so we visit there quite often. For many years we have been curious about the Vizcaya Inn and finally stayed there for 2 nights. We entered the big, beautiful house, filled out our registration paperwork, and then were asked if we would like to be told how to get to our room or would we like to be shown. We chose to be shown. So, the man exited the beautiful house and we followed him to the back of the house, to a beautiful courtyard/patio. He pointed to a building behind the large house and said which room we would be in. I asked if he was pointing to the top right and he was. The website for Vizcaya does not mention the carriage house behind the mansion. If I had known there was a possibility of being out there that would have helped to lessen the disappointment. It was quiet, even at night when there was a party in the Pavilion, which is part of the Vizcaya property.
Our room was nicely painted and decorated, the only antiques being light fixtures and a table in the bathroom. The carpet was horrendous. It was filthy and stained. The next day we were gone from about 10:00 in the morning until 3:00 or 3:30 in the afternoon. We came back to an uncleaned room. We had to call for clean towels, etc.
Parking was not adequate, although its location downtown makes it somewhat understandable. However, employees and repair trucks are allowed to park in the guest parking lot which consists of 6 spaces total.
When we tried to check out on Saturday morning there was one man serving breakfast and checking people out. It took a while before he was able to take a break from serving two tables to process our paperwork. He came out from the back and told us our company would send us a receipt. I asked him what he meant by "our company." He thought we'd booked through hotels.com, but I told him we'd booked through Vizcaya's website. He was gone to the back again for a while and then brought us a receipt.
Bottom line, the cash cow for the Vizcaya is clearly having weddings. We travel a lot and this bed and breakfast inn would not do very well if being an inn were its only means of income.
