“Fabulous luxe at reasonable price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2010

We flew into Sacramento on our way to a vacation in Yosemite. We wanted to visit with a friend in Sac and got a great deal on 3 nights (over the Labor Day holiday) at The Citizen. What a treat! It has a great downtown location, and the amenities are plush and lush. It was quiet, comfortable and has one of the best restaurants in Sacramento - and pretty damn good for anywhere.

The room was not large, but the bed and linens were top notch. And it was QUIET!!! The shower was hot and had lots of pressure - and good, comfy towels and robes. The only downside was the charge for wi-fi. Interesting that cheap hotels always seem to have free wi-fi - it's the expensive ones (or ones that cater to business travelers on expense accounts) that always charge.

The restaurant is really top rate - and we are serious foodies. The wine list is excellent and the staff all seem to know their stuff. They quietly attend to your needs before you even know you need them!

I just returned home after staying at the Citizen for two nights. I stay in a lot of hotels every year so it takes something special to make me go wow when it comes to a hotel stay.

I traveled with a colleague and we shared a room with 2 double beds. Were lucky in that we were placed in a corner room so it was of decent size. Lots of little added touches like bathrobes, amazing smelling toiletries, Keurig single cup coffee maker. The coolest amenity was the mini mac. Little mac computer hooked up to the flat screen tv with wireless keyboard so you could surf the net on your tv while laying it bed.

The 5:30 - 6:30pm complimentary wine reception was nice and we enjoyed chatting with the woman who was pouring the wine. She had obvious pride in the hotel which is great to see.

As far as location goes, I liked the downtown location and didn't experience any noise even though our room looked right out onto the park. The little coffee shop around the corner had great coffee.

Service was excellent. From the front desk to the valets and every employee in between. One example of the 360 degree customer service attitude at this hotel. One of the hotel housekeeping people was polishing the area around the elevators. He saw us approaching the elevator, stopped what he was doing and stood up (he was on his knees) and rushed over so he could push the UP button on the elevator for us. You don't get (or expect) that type of service very often,

Loved the decor of the hotel, one of the coolest hotel lobby's ever. Floor to ceiling law book library. Great attention was paid to carry the "Citizen" theme out EVERYWHERE in the hotel. Right down to the movies available to borrow at the front desk such as Citizen Cane and American President.

Will definitely stay here again

Keep in mind this hotel is a boutique hotel so the rooms are small but have all the amenities that one needs for a nice and comfortable stay.
A stocked refrigerator, big flat screen TV, very comfy bed with nice fluffy pillows. The shower had great pressure and was very nice sized. A nice deep sink. Robes, umbrella, computer, Internet, coffee.
There was a restaurant in the hotel although we did not try it out.
Valet parking which does cost $25 per night but you can get your car as many times as you want throughout the day or night. Someone is always there to hold the door for you.
The location was right downtown so if you have sensitive ears I would recommend making use of the ear plugs they provide in your bathroom. We stayed on a Friday night and it was noisy out on the street but we slept with the window open as that kind of stuff doesn't bother us in the least, just a nice background noise to fall asleep to.
It was within walking distance of Old Downtown if you don't mind a little walk of a couple miles maybe. We walked to Morton's Steakhouse and enjoyed dinner there just a mile away and the Sacramento Theatre is just half a mile walk from the hotel too which we enjoyed also.
I loved the look, old looking with a french flair to it.
The front desk staff were very friendly and took care of our every need.
I would consider them a bit pricey as I was looking online on thier site and it was going to cost me $168 but took a chance with the 4 star on Hot-wire and got it for $99 so it worked out perfectly for us.
It is very conveniently located just off the freeway and very easy to find. West-field Shopping center is within walking distance but we unfortunately didn't have time to check that out but just a walk by.
All in all I would highly recommend staying here for a nice get away.
Also our room looked just like the picture they have on thier web site, which was a nice suprise as alot of tiems I have found they put this nice picture up of thier rooms and you get there and the room looks nothing like it but the pictures they have look the same.

Obnoxious noise from the street below makes this otherwise ok hotel a no go. Brutal.

Thank you for sharing your comments. We are a downtown hotel and do experience street noise from time to time. I apologize that you stay was made unenjoyable due to it. We are working with City officials to address this occasional problem. I encourage anyone who may be a light sleeper to let us know in advance and we can place you in rooms that have less impact from street noise when it occurs.

I was really impressed with every aspect of the Citizen: The decor is reminiscent of the 1920s and beautiful inside; The room was excellent with an incredibly comfortable bed; The staff were very helpful, and seemed to know what I needed before I did. My only slight reservation was that the parking (or rather, the valet location) was a bit difficult to find at night, and I had to lap the block a couple of times before I realized that the stand for the restaurant was also for the hotel, but once I found it the process was completely smooth.

The restaurant attached to the hotel had amazing food that was very well prepared.

A great value for a great room. Definitely worth it if you find yourself in Sacramento.

The staff was helpful from the time we stepped on to the curb in front of the hotel until the time when we departed and they assisted us in packing our bicycles and bags into the car. My friend and I were riding a 55-mile organized bike ride and were afraid we were not going to make it back in time before check-out but the hotel accommodated us and said they would allow us a late check out of 2pm - luckily we finished our ride by Noon and checked out in time. The hotel is directly across the park, close to the train station and a ride away from our bike starting point at Discovery Park. I will be recommend this hotel to friends.
