“Nice boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2013

I have just stayed at the Citizen for a week on a business trip. Great corner room on the 11th floor with excellent views of the city. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom spacious.

All in all, a great stay. Too bad that downtown Sac gets really deserted at night and that still many business remain closed... :-(

Although the decor is exquisite and beds are comfy, the service is absolutely LOUSY when it comes to meeting any individual requests or in a timely manner (if at all). Space is cramped, and the walls are paper thin for neighboring rooms and conferences/large scale events can be heard FLOORS above where the noise actually takes place. I will never stay here again!

This Joie de Vivre boutique hotel is walking distance to many places of interest and restaurants. The "California politics" motif is clever and consistent. Many reviewers and even my travel companion were taken with the decor, ambiance, and whatnot. But I gotta tell ya, it didn't float my boat! (Except for The Grange--more on that incredible place later) Maybe for business travelers, my comments will seem unimportant, but this was a little to "big city" for my tastes. Yes, I know Sacramento is the state capital, but still! OK, here goes. Our room had 2 double beds, a small upholstered chair, a desk, and a chest that housed a mini-bar. No mini-frig for guest use. The Keurig was a nice touch, but only 2 coffee pods for what was clearly a "double" room. There was barely any room to maneuver in the room. It would have been nice if some of the wasted space in walk-in closet was in the room itself instead. And the wide-striped wallpaper made me dizzy!

The bathroom was large, too, although not much storage space. We were on the 13th floor, one of the "access restricted" rooms, but the keycard system for the elevator wasn't working, so, well, no biggie. Internet access cost $10-20 per day, with "free" access in Lobby. Well, yes it was free, but it was so SLOW as to be useless. It really was a misnomer to say they had internet access in Lobby. We also had problems with celebratory noise--this hotel is popular for weddings.

Now for the good news: The restaurant (not actually part of hotel, just attached) was phenomenal. The food was so wonderful--everything is local when possible, obviously fresh. Perfectly seasoned and prepared. Unbelievable, really. If, however, you plan on just getting a drink at the bar, be prepared to wait, and wait, and wait. Service so-so at the bar, but the night we ate there, service was attentive.

Room Tip: Stay away from banquet rooms!

This hotel has super comfy beds, delightful staff, and it feels like you have gone back in time to the 1920's! The Grange restaurant has delicious food and fabulous service. We would highly recommend this hotel if you are staying in Sacramento!

Room Tip: Ask to stay on the highest floor possible for a good view and less street noise.

If you need to stay in the downtown Sacramento, this is definitely the best choice. This boutique JDV hotel was comfortable, clean and convenient to several restaurants including a fabulous bakery (Estelle's at 901 K Street), and the Grange restaurant which is actually attached. Here is my main complaint: there is a conference center in the hotel which is in the corner on the 7th floor. We were woken up at 7 am with loud music and a speaker who was trying to rev up sales at a company sales meeting. Our room was actually shaking from the noise. I called the front desk who said they weren't supposed to start until later. I finally went down to the meeting and found them "practicing". So, I would recommend that you request to be away from the loud areas of the hotel (there is also a night club across the street).

Room Tip: Away from loud areas, especially the 7th floor conference center

I stayed at The Citizen Hotel for business, which got me a government rate of $95 ... so it was a very good rate. I stayed on the 11th floor and had two very huge windows that looked out onto J Street. The room was smaller, but the bathroom was huge. VERY comfy beds!
This is a Joie de Vivre property in which you can join the Joy of Life Club. Most of the time you can upgrade your room if there is availability and I got free WiFi, which they do charge for normally.
Hotel was in a great location for the training class I attended. Close to shopping and dining too!

When the government shut down we had to reorganize our trip to CA that was to include Kings canyon and Yosemite. So we decided on Lake Tahoe with a stop of from San Fran in Sacramento...and Boy oh boy we were so Happy with our choice. First off The Citizen was like a breath of fresh air...not your usual run of the mill hotel. The decor was wonderful and the slight tongue in cheek humour throughout was refreshing! Old world character with today's amenities made this Boutique Hotel stand out! Also the price was great we were there on a Friday night and the cost was comparable to a Marriott etc, if not better! There is a keurig in every room which is such a great idea. Bathroom was huge and even had a window. Bed was soooo comfortable and again the decor was a nice change.
They have a great restaurant The Grange and Bar which was hopping. At first glance the menu looks very different and it is but the food was outstanding so need to leave the Hotel that night. Breakfast even had its own flair!
The next day we decided to go for a walk and explore a bit of Sacramento and we are very happy we did. The tree lined streets around the State Capitol were beautiful and we even made it to the Old Downtown for a wander. As always there are areas of Downtowns you don't want to go, so use your common sense and you will enjoy.
What we thought was going to be a quick stop off turned out to be a very lovely visit!

Room Tip: Book ahead at The Grange...gets very very busy!
