“Cult Status Wines at a Simple Winery Tasting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2011

My wife and I were a little weary to visit this winery after reading some negative reviews here on TripAdvisor. However, I am a huge fan of their Cabernet Sauvignon so we made a reservation (all tours and tastings require reservation).

We had two coupons for 10 dollars off the tasting so it only cost 5 dollars per person. When we got there we were handed a glass with the Cakebread logo and ushered on a cramped space towards the back of their store by the wine educator.

We got to try six wines in total, three being whites and three reds. The Carneros Chardonnay, and their Napa Cabernet was excellent. The tasting went by pretty fast and the wine educator was a very nice and funny guy which made the experience quite pleasant. There was not hint of snobbery or pretentiousness. This is a great stop to make in Napa Valley, and we will be returning when we get our next chance.

“Food & wine pairing: The best of Napa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2010

The highlight of last weekend's Napa trip was food and wine pairing at Cakebread cellars. Understanding that the pairing cost is $40.00 for each person, we were given four wines and four bites of food. The entire experience lasted 90 minutes, included a tour and was worth every penny.

In reading through other reviews, it seems that some people are surprised at the small portions. These are small bites of food and the discussion revolves around bridging flavors. If you want a focused wine tasting, with re-tasting, this is probably not the ideal option.

“Jolly good tasting and mini tour!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2010

Cakebread winery is in a very beautiful setting, both the outside surroundings and the buildings and interiors too.
This was our second tasting of the day, a much larger winery in comparison to our first.
After a little confusion on bookings we were assigned our guide, and taken on a very quick tour through the winery and into the tasting room.
Our guide was a lovely chap, and seemed to know everything the was to know about Californian wines. However he did seem a little rushed.
The tasting was great fun, and he even let us try an extra Cab that one member of our group was particularly interested in tasting.
Lots of fun, completely unpretentious. Highly recommended!

“Excellent Experience-if you book the tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2010

Just returned from a Napa vacation and was VERY pleased with the Cakebread Tour and tasting! Bob was our wine educator and he gave us the overall walk around tour and educated us on why the grape vines are pruned or trained in different manners and such. He was great and the grounds are beautiful! then we went upstairs for a sit down tasting and enjoyed several very lovely wines. We bought two bottles of red, and were treated wonderfully! Your experience may not be as good if you don't book an educational tour, but ours was Fantastic and we highly recommend!

“Pretty good experience overall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2010

My wife and I went to cakebread for the first time last week. Overall we had a good experience. We drove in their driveway and were greeted by what I would call a security guard (although he just had normal clothes on). He asked us what we were doing today and then directed us to the parking lot. If we didn't have a reservation, I'm not sure where he would have sent us. I wasn't sure what the point of that was but based on other comments it seems like they run a very tight ship there. Having said that the rest of our experience was good. The tour consisted of a short walk on their grounds stopping occassionally to taste a wine. In total the tour/tasting lasted about 30 minutes. Their specialty is wine/food pairing and they have cooking classes. We missed out on both of those b/c you have to have reservations. if we go back, I would do both. Overall, it was our second favorite winery of the ones we visited.
