My wife and I stayed here two nights while on an extended trip to Sonoma and Napa during the first weeks of May. We were given a very favorable rate on a booking through a wine industry representative after she was unable to get us into the nearby vineyard guesthouse we were initially offered.
We didn't spend a lot of time in our room but found it quite comfortable. We were in room 111, just two doors down from the kitchen but were not particularly bothered by noise or smell. The rooms open up into a small courtyard with fountain, quiet sitting area and exotic plants, such as large Birds-of-paradise. Most of the guests while we were there seemed to be young to middle-aged couples on vacation and were very quiet.
Our room was on two levels: a large living area with fireplace and wet bar, and a raised sleeping area with queen bed along with a small child's bed/window seat. The bathroom was off the sleeping area with a normal-size tub/shower and small vanity. The bath could have used some updating as it was both small and the fixtures antiquated. The tub and commode were both retro green. The toilet in particular was not what one might call "efficient" and it seemed to run (quite loudly) almost 10 minutes to refill after every flush. Although the bath was clean, it was not particularly spacious, comfortable or modern.
The main room was done in the B&B's Rancho motif with stucco walls, exposed beams and earth-tone fabrics. There was a small closet with nice, plush bathrobes and a small balcony which overlooked nothing other than a trashy alleyway and the business next door. TV was of limited channels and very poor reception. Fortunately, we weren't there to watch TV. The wet bar wasn't very well-stocked and the prices seemed unreasonably high, so we opted to go to the small convenience store just across the street for water and snacks. The air conditioning worked well, which was a relief as the valley was experiencing unusually high temperatures while we were there.
Continental breakfast was included with our room and was typical: dry cereals, juices, milk, hard-boiled eggs, coffee, fruit and a very nice assortment of fresh pastries. The only caveat I would make about the breakfast was that there seemed to be no posted mealtime and the staff cleared off the bar before we were through eating at about 9:30 AM the second morning we were there. We did not eat at La Toque because we already had reservations elsewhere but would like to try it on our next trip, perhaps. The menu looked quite appealing.
To sum things up, we were quite pleased with our stay. Things were generally comfortable and very clean but could certainly use some updating. Prices are not bad by Napa standards and the staff was very courteous, helpful and accommodating. We would certainly stay here again and would recommend Rancho Caymus to anyone visiting the Rutherford area.
