“Wonderful hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

This place has been here forever. The sandwiches are simple and refreshing....but the food is just part of the experience. The location is hidden but once found it is this wonderful brick patio. Great fountain, stain glass open deck with seating. Mature plants and trees with umbrella hanging from to make more shade. It is truly a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a sandwich. Service is SUPER friendly. Really a wonderful place, only downside is it's not open on weekends. I keep telling my husband but he works out of town so he's never been :-(

“great sandwiches if you can find it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012

I have been going here for over 20+ years. The restaurant is in an old house with a great back yard and courtyard which you can eat in. Everything is made to order, great portions, the freshest food possible and the best banana cream pie on earth. If you can find it, you will always remember it.

“You'll come Back to Nelson St for a lunch to linger over.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2012

The hidden Back Street is definitely a treasure worth digging for, especially if you are an out-of-town guest hosted by an "O-R" or "Old Riversider". Almost impossible to find, you'll need a guide to locate The Back Street's parking lot off Brockton Ave and be led to the unpretentious restaurant entrance and the open-airish, unusual sandwich ordering counter deep within a leafy glade.

Back Street had folks building their own sandwiches long before Subway and other pretenders came along. However, this place is not chintzy with the meat or condiments. Several breads are available but I recommend Sheepherder's, a local artisan variety that makes excellent sandwiches.

If you are not sure of the special Back Street method of ordering, the helpful staff will walk you through it and carry your full tray out to your table. Try to get as far back from the street as possible to be in the shade (for summer) and avoid the crowds. Oh: don't forget to indulge in their locally reknown Banana Creme Pie.

Bottom line: Its open for lunch only, and you need to arrive early to avoid long lines but you might get a rare parking spot right out front. Owner 'Mac' usually has a low-cost special that hits the spot. You're invited to linger longer here, because relaxed, casual lunches is what The Back Street is all about. I highly recommend it.

“The best kept secret in Riverside ... truly a 'locals' spot ... the BEST!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

Having lunch at Back Street is an experience that most restaurants try to achieve, but most rarely do. It has been a fixture in Riverside for years ... family owned and operated. On a side street near the Brockton Arcade and off Magnolia Avenue, you wouldn't know it is a restaurant unless you have been there before ... and all the cars can be a tip off, too. Known for their great sandwiches (everything from roast beef to turkey and everything in between) and salad bar (beets, carrots, celery, pickles, cucumber salad, Italian garden) and their wonderful desserts ... it is the place everyone in Riverside knows about and loves. The outside patio is lovely ... well shaded by old trees, lots of birds, a great fountain ... never rushed by the attentive staff who are always ready to refill your ice tea (really good) or bring you a dessert ... one of them has been on staff for 27 years and she hasn't lost her lovely smile! A little pricey, yes ... but you get what you pay for and, in this case, you get the best. Highly recommended ... if you are from out of town, find it ... you won't be disappointed.

“Most Unique Lunch Stop in Riverside”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2012 via mobile

Backstreet is not just a "lunch only" deli but provides a most unique and charming escape from the business of the city. It provides a relaxing garden patio setting that is accented creatively to make your experience enjoyable. I have found few places were the service is so personal. Most of the staff have been serving here for years.
FOOD: many of the previous reviews cover food but I must say I have never been disappointed. It is a simple but complete selection. All the ingredients are fresh and delicious. But the pies are all wonderful.
What I appreciate most is the family owned character of Backstreet. The longevity of the deli speaks for itself. Since 1969. Oh, don't bother dropping in during winter months as they close during that time. Closed weekends as well.
Yes, parking is a hassle but to eat good food In a unique garden patio is worth it. Take your time enjoy the atmosphere and leave happy.
