“Portofino SECRETS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

SECRETS to Portofino...Super simple drive there, valeted our car and immediately jumped on the free beach cruisers, 5 minute ride along the harbor to the fresh live fish markets, select live dungenous crab oyster's shrimp and fish and they cook em right there , fun. watched fishermen on the pier, had a fresh churro. back to hotel for a Jacuzzi dip. back to room, oceanfront doors wide open cool breeze kissing my feet, took a short nap, ahhhhhh. around the corner is a fresh ahi takeout " Just Poke" now on our balcony Poke triscuits n wine , absorbing the warm sun twinkling off the ocean, gondolas rowing by we toasted the bride . The valets get your car in a snap, We start our dinner experience at Kincads on the pier happyhour 7 days a week, get the sampler platter, coconut shrimp crab dip filet steaks, then we go to BLUE WATER GRILL just around the corner, KILLER salt n pepper shrimp in a super yum sauce only $10 for tons of big shrimp, wow what a deal, also seasoned Edamame and a cup lobster bisque for dipping bread ( our little secret) . we end up back at the pier for live music and dessert :) then hangout in the hotel lobby in front of cozy fireplace talking to people from around the world. slept like babys with the oceanfront doors open all nite, listening to the natural sounds of the ocean and harbor, some seals far away and the occasional seagulls, feels like Im sailing on a $100 million yacht :) . Our room was super clean and fun nautical theme. most of the hotel was updated, the elevator was classic, it has its own quirks which makes you feel like wow, I wonder what famous people have ridden in this :) . so we had breakfast on our balcony , watching allllllll the seals chasing fish, paddleboarders, sailboats, very intertaining. on the property is Rocky Point rentals, we kayaked around and imagined what yachts we would buy :) went to the pier again for lunch, garlic shimp Hawaiian style, raspberry smoothies and just layed on the beach like moviestars :) overall, our stay was SUPER affordable , like weirdly affordable, we had allll the delicacies of the world at our fingertips, fun people.

Room Tip: Premier room oceanfront 3rd floor

Helpful, professional staff. Food at restaurant was very good. Room nicely appointed, views were grand. Sunday night stay was very quiet, Monday morning ride on complimentary beach cruisers was uncrowded.

Room Tip: Water facing rooms have the view. Though apparently the seals in the harbor can get loud.

Check in was smooth and I was offered upgrade to larger waterfront room for a nominal fee. I was glad I chose this offer because their regular rooms was small (i.e. NYC small). But if you are looking for a place to sleep and spending your time out and about then this might be the property for you. Bathroom and room were clean. There is a small desk area. Bed was not comfortable but in subsequent stays, double beds were more comfortable. A stocked mini bar but according to the front desk you can take their beverages out and use the fridge for your items. Free Wifi in the lobby but there is a charge for your room. I frequented Baleens for breakfast, lunch and dinner and I will write a separate review of their property restaurant. Bed was comfortable. Small closet and safe in the closet. I was attending a USC Center for Effective Organizations event at the Portofino property.
HVAC unit was not very responsive but since you're next to the Ocean, you can slide open your glass door onto the patio. Waterside is more interesting but you do hear an occasional seal and passing marine craft. Again rooms, are a bit small unless you get a bigger room and if you're planning to spend more time in the room, you might consider another property. I have also stayed at the Marriott Manhattan Beach about `10-15 minute drive and the Residence Inn El Segundo about 15 - 20 minute drive. You can walk to a nearby Ruby's diner for burgers and shakes or a nearby Cheesecake Factory for a varied menu. A further walk is a more formal Charthouse for both sea food and steaks. If you want to be at the waterfront or right next to their conference center then this might be the property for you.

Room Tip: If you want a larger room, maybe get an upgrade to larger room. I found the harbor side rooms to be...

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We are thrilled you were able to experience an upgraded room with a view. We understand your concerns about the HVAC system. Because your door was open, you might have noticed a change in air flow. Air Conditioning sensors located on the balcony doors and windows will turn off the Air Conditioning unit if a door or window is opened. Sensors located on the Guestroom entry door activate and deactivate the Air Conditioning unit upon your entrance and exit of your room. Our sophisticated Air Conditioning system also senses when there is more than one person in the room to provide additionally cooling.

We are happy to hear that you were able to explore the area. It’s nice to know when guests on business are able to get out and see our city. We hope to see you again for your next USC conference.

Thank you for staying with us. Have a great summer!

My husband and I have been travelling around the world for 15 years. Portofino Hotel and staff have provided one of our very best experiences. Beautiful location in the middle of Los Angeles, yet away from the hustle and bustle. Interior decoration and design were amongst the best I've seen. The price was perfect. Cleanliness and accomodations were exemplary. Staff and concierge service were the best. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone!

Room Tip: All rooms a beautiful, but the rooms with a bay view on the second floor would be my first choice.

Green Features: Loved the beautiful grounds covered in local plants that do not need as much water. Temperature is controlled. Lights go automatically if left on in room.

Beautiful rooms and professional staff. Especially nice lounge area with lots of luxurious & comfortable seating and conversation areas, including nice pillowed bench seats in front of massive windows that open onto the beach. Does not include breakfast, but there is a gourmet restaurant on the premises. The Cheesecake Factory and other restaurants are also within walking distance. Nice beach access and walk to Redondo Beach Pier. Always a wonderful experience!
