Gourmet burger places seem to be all the rage these days. What shocks me is by the time you add all the condiments you used to get years ago, it costs as much as a small steak!
Enter the Bullpen, a wonderful neighborhood gem in the heart of the Riviera. It has been a quiet mainstay for years, and perhaps one of the South Bay's best kept secrets. Walking in is like going through a time warp to the days when taverns and bars served absolutely fabulous food in a dark and cozy environment.
We have enjoyed having Nicole as our server for many years. She remembers her customers, and treats everyone like an old friend. They have many solid dishes including the vanishing decadent chicken livers.
But today, my review focuses on a truly magnificent burger. It is prepared "medium", but fortunately is a perfect medium rare with a choice of cheese. The quality of their meat is superb. Fresh tomato, lettuce and raw onion on a delectably soft bun that i have seen in only one other high end restaurant. The combo comes with soup or a very generous salad with one of our favorite additions ~ pickled beets. There are several dressings to choose from, but beware one is loaded with garlic. The french fries are medium cut and fried to a crispy perfection. With a price of around $12, the other super pricey gourmet burger places should hold their heads in shame.
Kudos to the family run Bullpen!
