“A clean, comfortable room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2007

We found the Best Western Hilltop Inn to be a clean, comfortable, reasonably priced room at about $120 a night: a perfectly acceptable place to stay for a night on our drive from San Jose to Seattle. The room comes with a microfridge, tucked under the bathroom sink (which is outside the bathroom). The bathroom was actually slightly larger than the bathroom at the Marriott Residence Inn we stayed at the night before. Even though the room had an outside entrance facing the parking lot, we found the room quite quiet throughout the night. The bed was a comfortable pillowtop, and temperature was controlled by a thermostat (as opposed to a knob on the heating/AC unit. We appreciated the free internet access and free parking.

Also, my partner found the complimentary breakfast buffet to have far better variety and food quality than average. We've stayed at many hotels, and he found this breakfast buffet to be one of the best, plus it had plenty of room for all the breakfast eaters.

We did have one issue with the room: Although our room with a king-sized bed was of average length, it had a narrow width. The desk was positioned along the middle of one of the longer walls so that if you're sitting at the desk, the bed is behind you. If an adult is sitting at the desk, there is no way to get past the bed, other than climbing on the bed to get around the person at the desk. And if you're the person sleeping on the side of the bed further from the bathroom, you have to make sure you push in the desk chair before you go to bed so you won't bump into it, otherwise it will completely block your path to the bathroom. Thus, a room with a king-sized bed might be awkward to stay in if you have more than one person in the room, or are staying for more than a night or two.

Still, we found this motel a perfectly good place for a one-night stay on a road trip, and would not hesitate to stay here again.

  • Liked — Clean, comfortable, & quiet
  • Disliked — Narrow width room with desk blocking the aisle.

I'm not sure where some of these other reviewers were staying but our experience was great. The room was very clean and the carpet looked new. It was a good location and very easy to find. We enjoyed the pool which was very nice and of course the hot buffet breakfast was excellent. The entire hotel looked very well maintained, clean and updated. We would recommend the hotel quite highly. The connecting restaurant was also very nice and had a nice jazz band out on the patio when we were there on a Saturday night.

I booked this hotel on the first leg of a Southern California to Canada driving vacation. I am traveling with my three older teenage kids. I booked the room through Best Western's website and found the best rate available for a 2-queen room for $120 with a fridge, microwave, and all of the other usual amenities. I requested a rollaway bed and a ground floor room.
We arrived around 9 p.m. and check-in was quick and pleasant. The room was on the bottom floor, was clean and the rollaway was already there. Usually when I request a rollaway when making a reservation, I end up having to request it again when I get to the room as they are usually not put in the room beforehand.
I had absolutely no problem with the room, and the breakfast at the hotel restaurant was pretty decent.
The location was perfect to visit the Lake Shasta area and then continue our journey North.

  • Liked — Close to Lake Shasta
  • Disliked — Local restaurants close early on weekdays

This is a motel. Worse than back in the day when I would stay at a Motel 6. Dirty floors turned our feet black, the room was so small and smelled, the bathroom very small and toiletries were cheap (I think they acually had suave). Breakfast was ok with a fair amount of selection but when I asked the dining attendent if we could order pancakes or waffles she was very rude and said, "what you see is what you get". The room service menu had those items and more so what was that all about? Strange. Overall the hotel was not what we were expecting.
On another note Cattlmens steakhouse was very good just like ours locally. It had a little old feeling though, I had the impression it was one of the first ever in the chain.

We stayed at this hotel with our two children for one night as we traveled home through northern California. The strengths of this property are a nice pool (8 ft deep) and excellent breakfast (included). However, several things bothered us about this property. The main complaint is the room was not very clean. We found a few yogurt covered raisins left under the bed which the maid obviously did not clean under. The carpet itself was quite dirty, as our bare feet soon looked black after walking around the room. Also, the lack of an elevator may pose a problem for some travelers.

  • Liked — the breakfast and pool
  • Disliked — dirty room

My wife and I stayed here for two nights in late June 2007. The room was clean, comfortable and looked like it had just been remodeled. Front desk personnel very friendly and helpful. The pool side chaise lounges made us very sleepy. Our dinner at their restaurant, C. R. Gibbs was quite good, and the Fat Cat Pinot Noir recommended by our waitress was a great value. We would definitely stay here again.

  • Liked — Very clean and everything in good shape.
  • Disliked — Everything was good, no complaints.

When booking you are asked if you have any special requests.I requested a room with minimal street noise. The three rooms I was given for our party of guests were as close to highway 5(a major north/south corridor) without actually being on the freeway and its endless stream of semi trucks. It seems that since we were in the very back of the hotel we were able to enjoy the view of gas tankers and heavy equip. parked outside our room as this was an out of the way spot not viewed from the front street.I was offered the opportunity to change rooms for an additional $25 per night, perhaps I should have paid more but I have never stayed in ahotel that couldnt manage an acceptable room when they were available. Breakfast at the hotel Restaurant was good .On balance I would not choose to stay at this location ever again.

  • Liked — Breakfast buffet was well run
  • Disliked — Street noise, mal functioning card entry.Staff was friendly but not very knowledgeable.
