“BEAUTIFUL RESORT, EXCELLENT SERVICE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2009

We just returned from a 3-Day Package purchased from LuxuryLink. My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary with a 1-year old baby. What a wonderful trip! There were some miscommunications in the beginning, but after some firm telephone calls, the staff was more than accommodating and we received excellent service.

Terranea's Signature Restaurant - Mar Sel...is to die for! Amazing views, great food. Our little baby even enjoyed it (and got to stay out past her bedtime).

In addition, I treated myself to their luxurious spa treatment - Flickering Embers...ahh, simply spoiled.

The resort sits on top of the cliffs, and has AMAZING views, and wonderful hiking trails to take baby. It is VERY children-friendly, and also has a separate pool for those who prefer to travel without kids.

We would go back in a heartbeat. What a gem!

Hopefully the management at the hotel has looked through the past reviews and made some improvements. I actually hadn't read them until after I booked a room so I crossed my fingers that our stay would be good (it was our anniversary).
As stated many times, the location is beautiful and peaceful, and we were lucky to have been upgraded to an Ocean Side room at the end of building looking south. Saw dolphins from our window and enjoyed the peace and quiet. I did a wonderful Yoga class one morning in their fitness center. The spa area, which includes the fitness center and "spa only" pool is beautiful. We found the service friendly and attentive, although fortunately we didn't have any issues that required any special attention. We self-parked for $5/day, so thanks to all those who warned of the $30/day valet fee. Parking is very close-by and unless you enjoy waiting 15 mins for your car everytime you need it, I'm not sure why you would use valet.
The 2 cons: As stated, the food is not very good, and extremely expensive for what it is. However, if you can move past the fact that you won't be getting Haute Cuisine, the setting, especially at Nelson's is wonderful. Also, the elevators bothered me. They smelled, the carpet desperately needed steam cleaning, and I couldn't help thinking that if I didn't know it was a new building, I would have thought it was left-over from an old building and never remodeled. There was also a strange sulphur/rotten eggs smell on the pool level. I'm not sure if they were having specific issues or that is always the case.
Overall, it was lovely, although I would agree that anyone used to staying at FS or RC hotels, will consider this more of a 4 1/2 star than 5 star. But if you can get a good rate, it's a wonderful spot to relax, or to drive north or south and explore the area.

As others have noted, the early reviews were terrible, and we were not expecting much. I believe they took the feedback to heart. The food and service were great. And of course the place is gorgeous.

Highlights: A spectacular spot, with lovely walks on trails and along the ocean. A fantastic fitness center. Multiple beautiful pools. Beautiful open fire pits to sit around on a cool night. Very helpful staff - everyone was attentive and friendly. Refrigerator in the room. Very nicely appointed bathroom with lovely robes.

Minor issues: While our room was cleaned every day, we were only offered turn down service on the 3rd evening. Not a big deal, but seemed strange and random. And while our suite had a very large closet, there was no dresser. That was very strange. There were 2 shelves under the TV in the bedroom which housed the coffeemaker, ice bucket, glasses, etc. So we moved those out and put our clothes there. Very strange to have such an otherwise well-appointed suite lacking clothes drawers.

But overall we were very pleased and I do in fact think it qualifies as a 5 star place.

The hotel is beautiful but the service was poor. They need to get employee that are able to help with questions from guests. Everyone seemed oblivious to basic questions.

My wife and I stayed at Terranea to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary.

We thoroughly enjoyed our casita with an ocean view, king-size bed, large tub, and outside patio. Though most of the meals at the resort were quite expensive, we were prepared to splurge at little. We were also lucky enough to stay during a 1/2 off special when they first opened! We enjoyed short walks along the nature trail, relaxing by the pool, and sleeping late.

It's a gorgeous resort. We were very impressed.

Terranea has the winning asset in terms of resort location, one of the best on pacific coast. The resort is brand new thus the property is absolutely stunnigly beautiful. I took my husband there to celebrate his birthday for a long weekend late August. I called the hotel a week ahead to inform them of the occasion and requested something special to be placed in the room when we arrived. Ritz at Half Moon Bay had chocolate dipped strawberries and a birthday card signed by the hospitality staff waiting in the room when we arrived last year for the same occasion. Given the reviews on Tripadvisor from other customers, I did not have high hope for Terranea but still wish they would do something, may be just a birthday card or some kind of acknowledgment. Nada, big goose egg, not even a "happy birthday" from the front desk, not a card in the room. Total disappointment but then again, i had low expectation. For the $ they charged, they should provde better service than that.

We were charged different prices for the 2 identical breakfast buffet during our stay. The waitress was not able to give an acceptable explanation when asked so she corrected it. If we haven't checked the bill and just signed it, we would have been overcharged for no apparent reason.

We used the spa for a couple massage and pedicure. The pool dedicated for spa customers only was very nice but again, the serve staff was not well trained and pool side service was spotty at best. We had used the pool while waiting for our massage appointment and since we didn't bring a watch and there was not a clock in the pool area, we had asked one of the servers to please let us know when it's 15 mins before our appointment. We totally enjoyed our time at poolside relaxing. our appointment time came and gone and the server didn't tell us. We didn't realize until 15 mins passed our appointment time and the masseuse & masseur were out looking for us!!! Note to self, always bring a watch even to spa :-)

We didn't try any of the other restaurants on the property so can't comment on that. The family pool was very crowded so the spa pool was a little piece of heaven. All in all it was a enjoyable stay despite the spotty service. Terranea has a location worth of gold but it definitely doesn't provide services worthy of a 5-star hotel. It has a long way to go to get to service level of true 5-star hotels such as Ritz or Four Seasons. If you can get a good rate, it's a wonderful resort.

They clearly have gotten the message from the early "bad" reviews because when we went out there in late Sept we had nothing but first class service, food (except Nelsons which was expensive "bar" food and just ok) accommodations, and attention. Any minor issues (no chairs on our balcony at arrival) were very quickly taken care of with apologies. We ate in all of the restaurants and had spa services. They have a very good fitness facility. We stayed for three nights and I really do not have one complaint about the resort or our stay. I will definitely go back. The grounds are amazing! Try it. I think you will like it.
