We just returned from a week long trip - The water park features are great and family friendly, and the life guards and waitstaff at the pool are cheerful and fun. There are several options for kids, and I was able to supervise mine (all swimmers) yet let them have a little freedom ... Water buckets dumping and fountains spraying, a sandy beach area for the tiny kids, and of course the ‘river’ that you can float around and around all day. The ‘river’ is lit up at night and would be a wonderful experience after dark. The grounds are beautiful and we saw hummingbirds and frogs and ducks – Fun family stuff.
BUT the water features close at 6pm, and there is no food available at the resort after 6pm except fine dining or room service - We found this out the hard way with 5 hungry kids and no options for dinner except a fancy restaurant. Ugh! Several days had only one of two water slides open, and the stairs to them are grubby and smell like urine (imagine this in 110+ degree weather) - First thing in the morning it appears that there is no daily/nightly cleaning of the common areas. If you want a lounge chair, you need to be lined up at one of the gates long before the water features open at 10. If you time it right throughout the day, you might catch someone leaving, and get a shot at a chair, perhaps even one with shade. Honestly, if you have a bunch of kids in the water, and you are supervising them, you don’t spend a whole lot of time on a chair, but it’s nice to have a home base to hold your bag, towels, coverups and sunscreen, etc. And especially nice to have a place to get out of the blazing sun. Maybe the resort could install some shaded racks or cubbies? Somewhere to keep your stuff for those who don't need a lounge chair!
The shallow main pool is open until 10 but it is a rowdy, unmanaged mess - there are many unsupervised teens and preteens who are running and jumping and splashing and cannonballing all inbetween those of us who are there swimming or relaxing. The stars and trees are beautiful, and it seems like a great place to relax and unwind after dinner when it’s not so hot - but that was not the experience at all. There are no lifeguards or attendants of any kind near the pool, no hotel staff except at the towel stand (and they conveniently "can't see") what's going on and don't much care, and no security or management ever make an appearance. The out-of control kids have run us off all three nights so far, and although I have reported it to both the towel attendants and front desk, no one working here seems to care! Our kids are normal kids (including 4 rambunctious boys), and they love to play and laugh and enjoy the pool like active children - The problem kids are throwing cups of water, doing backflips into small groups of other swimmers, throwing balls at strangers, running around the pitch black pool area bumping chairs, etc. You know it’s bad when your kids ask you to make it stop! By the third night, I was angry. The resort could easily place a staffer at the pool with oversight responsibilities - to make sure that the kids who are obviously dumped at the pool while the parents go elsewhere do not have the ability to trash everyone else's night.
So, if this is the kind of "resort" environment you are seeking, this is a good choice!
Our rooms were fine, although one has an overwhelming smell of mold/mildew, we are running the AC constantly and opening doors to try to abate it. And housekeeping didn't come one day (the day the bed linens were supposed to be changed) so the bare minimum of room towels are not sufficient to make it two days. When they did come, they left 3 towels for 4 people, and when I called and asked for more I was told that they could not be delivered unless I remained in the room to wait for them. Refrigerator that we requested was placed in the wrong room for our group – It didn’t work anyway and although we reported it, they attempted to charge us for it at check out regardless. "Little" stuff that adds up, and kids have to sit and wait while adults try to work these things out with phone calls and visits to the desk, etc.
We reserved rooms under a special offer with a breakfast credit which we are expecting to receive although the resort will not confirm it in writing. At checkout, the discount WAS honored but only after we produced our own extensive documentation – Saw that coming!
SO this is a great place to bring the family - If you are prepared to find dinner options outside of the resort or enjoy the fine dining environment with your kids. And if you don't mind wild disturbances during your evening swim that are ignored by the resort. And if you can be one of the first through the gate when the pool opens to secure a chair, and maybe even some shade!
I do want to emphasize that the daily lifeguards and staff at the ‘water park’ area were EXCEPTIONAL, obviously very well trained and very safety conscious. And our rooms were situated in a super neat location near one of the gates to the water features. The linens and furnishings were nice, the grounds beautiful, the tile work pretty, and everyone on duty that we encountered was pleasant.
I've traveled around the world with my large family and lots of children - We are no stranger to either resorts or budget hotels, so it's fair for me to say that there were many great features at this place, but that management needs to step up and follow through to make the guest experience a good one. I would bring the kids back again, and even pay a little more for a room rate if I was sure that these items had been adressed - Until then, the many other options in the area will get my family's business!
