“So-so”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2007

We stayed at the Wharfmaster's Inn over Easter weekend. There were several nice things about the stay. In particular, we enjoyed the fountain in the courtyard, the oversized tub and the nice toiletries. Also, the staff was pleasant and our room opened onto a very nice deck.

There were a few problems, however. First, our room was slightly shabby and showed signs of shoddy maintenance (i.e. the bathtub handle came off, sloppy faucet repairs, incorrectly mounted recessed lighting, missing chain lock, etc.). Second, our room did not have a shower which was a bit of an inconvenience. Third, the bed was way too soft and seemed to slant at a weird angle. It could be a matter of preference, but still I woke up sore. Finally, we were on the bottom floor, and the noise from up above us was terrible. Our upstairs neighbors weren't trying to be loud - they were simply walking, using their whirlpool tub and going about their business - but the noise really bothered us. In particular, when they turned on the jets it sounded as if we were in the cargo hold of an airplane.

Overall, our stay was not very comfortable but given the price we paid, we weren't expecting perfection. Still, the next time we go to Mendocino County, we plan to spend a little more in hopes of finding better accommodations.

We stayed there during the week, and took advantage of a midweek special. We got, what we were convinced had to be the best view in the place. It was amazing. We arrived at night, and didn't get to see the view, until morning. We woke up around 7 or 7:30 and watched fishermen load their boats up to head out for seat. We had a 120 degree view of the ocean (and the parts that were blocked, were blocked by the cliffs of the harbor! not bad at all!). The next morning we watched whales FROM OUR BED.

The inn is perched on a cliff above a small market place at the harbor. At first I thought it was a bit of a bummer that the market was there, but in the end, it didn't bother us whatsoever, it still felt very private, and it actually provided us some entertainment when we felt like people watching.. We felt like we could see them, but no one was looking at us.

The room itself could use some improvement. A lot of the workmanship is very poor. The fixtures hung loose from the sink and tub. But the Tub was an excellent way to enjoy chocolates and wine at the end of the day.

The Town of Point Arena was described as being run down or a little "dumpy" in some other other reviews, but we really liked it. We felt it was very "small coastal town", but kept up quite well, considering the age of most of the buildings.

The hotel staff was friendly. All in all we'd certainly go back despite some of maintenance needs. Hopefully if they do decide to fix those things, the price doesn't go up, because we got an awesome deal, and would hate to pay more next time.

We stayed at the Wharf Masters Inn last spring and enjoyed our stay so much. It was lovely from the time we signed in to the drive off the property. It's decorated grounds with lovely carved driftwood art is pretty as the many flowers too.
The room was just as pictured on the internet pixs but even lovelier in person. Nice furniture. The bed looked european to us with the comfy thick linens. The toiletries where great as well as the deep bathtub for a great but noisy soak. Sat out on the balcony reading. We enjoyed dinner at the fish resturant down below and a evening walk out on the wharf.
Breakfast was a good value like the same as most hotels without a resturant. Yes deffinitly take in the lighthouse and even the local irish graveyard that gives you a sense of the area history. Like others said there's not a lot to do in Pt. Arena itself but Gualala is just down the road with many art galleries and shops and Inns too.

My fiance and I stayed over for one night in order to check out the hotel where our wedding guests would be staying in November. We had an amazing ocean front room that was warm, comfortable and clean. We left our door open all night to hear the ocean and had the fireplace going for warmth. Everyone was very nice and helpful and allowed us to see some of the rooms that we had reserved for guests. Overall the hotel is just what you would want in a small coastal town. It does not try to be fancy so if you are looking for silk robes try another area. If you are looking for a relaxing weekend to visit the area, lighthouse, local restaurants, etc this is a wonderful stay and they allow one night minimums. Breakfast was complete with cereal, coffee, muffins. If you want something heartier there are tons of restaurants in Point Arena, Elk, etc. Even though the hotel might benefit from some minor updating I fear that would cause them to charge more and right now their prices are pretty reasonable.

This is a nice, quiet and comfortable facility. Not quite a B & B, but much better than a motel. The town of Point Arena is somewhate remote but not terribly far from the town of Mendocino and other attractions. If you are looking for a "real" coastal village with a slow pace and no hype, Point Arena is a good choice, and the Wharf Master's Inn is the best in town.

The inn was clean and quiet, even for a weekend. The staff were pleasent. The room was spacious, ours even had a beutiful ocean view. The continental breakfast was a nice treat. Overall its a nice place to relax, in a peacful setting.
BUT.... dont expect to find much to do in Point Arena. Its a small pass through town. Expect to drive about 2 hours south to find(Bodega Bay) civilization! However I would recommend going to the lighthouse. It offers tours, and a bit of Point Arena history.

I would call this place a cross between a hotel and a B&B. As I traveled through Northern CA, I stayed in a number of hotels/motels and this one was a nice change. In the dark, the place was very difficult to find...the town of Point Arena is somewhat run down, so, having booked the place based on a quick Internet search, I became a little nervous as I drove through the town several times trying to find the correct road. However, I was pleasantly surprised once I checked in. I stayed in the cheapest grade of room ($80/night), but received much more for my money than at more expensive chain motels. It was spacious and had a much more homey feel than a typical hotel. The soaking tub was very nice after two straight days of walking San Francisco hills. The breakfast in the morning was also decent by typical "continental breakfast" standards. The only negative was that without a shower, it was difficult to wash my hair in the tub. They did not have Internet access in the rooms, but I was able to connect via a wireless connection in the area. The place was very peaceful and safe and I loved walking down the hill to the water in the morning.
