“Lumpy bed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

This place was a joke ,the hot tub they advertise does not work, the mattress was so uncomfortable we were booked for four nights & only stayed two thats how bad the bed was.No stopper for the sink so they made one out of a bottle lid. Not the cleanest place ,so all in all we were very disappointed as we drove there from a distance away. Also the food at the resturants was just OK & no beach to walk on, it is all rocky. You would think they would have offered a refund but very sad to say they did not !!!!

Room Tip: Just don't book a room here it is not a good place to go.

We found this property on Travelzoo with deal for a two night stay for $149 for my wife and myself. The hotel itself is likely a 3 star based on its facilities and decor, but the room was very large and clean with a very nice two-person jacuzzi and was overall more than adequate. My wife thought the bed was a bit soft, but I thought it was very comfortable. It could use some updating in the next year or two. What bumped my rating up to 4 stars, however, was the view from our balcony and/or balcony window, which was spectacular. It overlooked a cove and from the comfort of our bed we would see an amazing sunset over the ocean, as well as surfers in the cove, and, if one looked carefully, whales spouting in the distance. It appeared that every room in the property likely had similar views. About 50 yards away, was a pier which jutted out into the cove. While on both of our days at the property we could easily see whales spouting in the distance, on our first day there was actually a juvenile humpback whale which swam right up to the pier and played with the buoy adjacent to the pier. The magnificent creature was just immediately below one's feet, now more than 15 feet away. You couldn't pay to see this anywhere else. Though I realize that this may not be something that occurs everyday, the potential is there! Regardless, even without the local whale watching, the view from the pier was magnificent. One cannot find lodging this close to the water for this price. The continental breakfast was basic but adequate. Nothing fancy but a generous supply of your basic continental breakfast foods, which were constantly being re-supplied. The hotel staff were friendly enough, and pleasantly gave suggestions for other things to do in the vicinity. There was a restaurant, I believe called the "Chowder House," nearly adjacent to the hotel and the pier. The food was much better than I had expected for the location. The fish and chips were excellent with some of the freshest cod that I have ever had, and with good sweet potato fries. The clam chowder was decent but not exceptional. Overall, we had a great time with the location of the property being the main draw. For the price, one could not beat the deal.

Room Tip: The top floor, south side rooms will likely be the quietest rooms with the best views. Try to get a...

We stayed here for one night while driving up to Mendocino. The innkeepers were very helpful in recommending places to eat and suggestions for exploring the area. Our room had a beautiful ocean view. The king sized feather bed was also very comfortable and the three of slept very well. Our bathroom and shower had very boring, industrial-looking gray tile. The red carpet was a bit worn and the breakfast room is drab. Also, the wireless internet barely worked. We were told that the signal was not strong enough to reach our room. With just a bit more effort this place could be much more charming. It needs nicer carpets (or bare floors), some improvements to the bathrooms and stronger wireless internet service.

Room Tip: Ask to see if your room has a jacuzzi tub and real fireplace - not an electric fireplace.

We were driving down the breath takingly beautiful coast and we ended up checking into the Inn because it was the end of the day and hotels are few and far between in that area. The price was more than we had planned to pay but it was our fault for not thinking far enough ahead to find something more reasonable.
Once we resigned ourselves to the price we figured we should enjoy the room. The first one they put us in stunk of cat pee or as the host said maybe a raccoon was dead in the wall (huh??)
We were moved to another room which was fine. This hotel is over rated in our opinion. The jetted tub was very nice but the rest is not really antiques it is just shabby old and a bit smelly.
We didn't stay for the breakfast as it didn't open until 8 and we needed to get on the road.
Don't think this will be on our list to return to .

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

We were driving up the coast to Fort Bragg the weekend of the big storm (November 30) for my boyfriend's birthday. Highway 1 was closed a few miles up the road from Point Arena so we were unable to get to our destination. We were very disappointed, but the kind ladies at the Point Arena Post Office recommended the Wharfmaster's Inn. Pat and Brenda were warm and welcoming, upgraded us to a full ocean view room Lookout Room # 121) and gave us a complimentary bottle of wine to celebrate David's birthday. They loaned us a book of the Point Arena area to look at which was fascinating. We took in a movie at the little local movie house and since all therestaurants closed before the movie was out, we feasted on popcorn for dinner, LOL. The view was amazing, and it was calm and peaceful. The fireplace kept the room cozy and we loved the Jacuzzi. So even though it was not our original destination, it turned out to be a wonderful evening. Thanks very much to Pat and Brenda for their hospitality.

Room Tip: Lookout Room #121 has an amazing veiw!

Pros:
Partial Ocean view was a good view
Large room, two suit case stands
Clean linens/floors/bathroom
Moderate size jetted tub - clean, with extra towels and candles
Shower is cozy for two, but great water pressure
Refrigerator will hold quite a bit (with freezer section)
Generous continental breakfast

Cons:
Pricey without a 'deal' (would have been $179/night Sat & Sun).
Queen size bed small, feather beds lumpy, squishy; feather pillows limp.
Sink/counter was super low - I'm 5'3".
Odd light and towel fixtures - need a heavy cleaning to remove dust.
Most of the lighting is track lighting - not so romantic.
They ask you not to use tub after 10:30 pm or before 9:30 am due to noise and H2O supply.
Travelzoo free bottle of wine is a SPLIT of Chenin Blanc.
Verify with Travelzoo or Groupon what the additional tax will be, ours was over 20%.

Know:
Location is remote, like many towns in Mendocino County.
Place is older and needs work - but everything did work.
Fireplace is electric (perhaps safer, but not as romantic)
The 'Chowder House' and 'Pizza & Cream' restaurants in walking distance have fly/gnat problems. CH has about 30 beers on tap - flies liked the beer too though.

Note: Staff wasn't as friendly as I expected for a boutique/B&B type hotel. Felt like I was putting them out during check in and check out.

This place is very special. The front desk/owners are very helpful and the rooms are super clean and comfortable. Weather was a bit rainy, however the fireplace took care of the dampness. We spent another wonderful night in this place.
