We stopped off at Pismo on our way up to San Francisco. The hotel was convenient for the beach. Whilst the foyer was dated we only needed a room for the night so decor was irrelevant really. The staff were friendly and booked us in. It wasn't cheap! After being told the gates all get shut at 10pm and no staff were available at night (weird) we were told where our room was. Walking up to our room there was a faint smell but by the time we reached the room the smell was overpowering (couldn't put my finger on what it was!). Trying to be positive we opened the window to air it and went for a walk. Whilst the beach itself is spectacular, Pismo is not. There seemed to be nothing but drunks and sinister looking people staggering along the beach wall and a bar, open for business but with boarded up windows (they probably gave up repairing them). We felt very uncomfortable so went back to the hotel (couple more drunks leaning against the car park wall). Back in the room the smell was still unbearable and we found it quite hard to breath so we decided to leave. The prospect of driving another 4 hours to SF was better than staying with that smell!
