First and foremost...the Pioneertown Motel is OPEN. No matter what anyone tells you. I was mortified to find that the previous owners' website was still up...with a message that the hotel was closed. Probably just an oversight...but what an oversight! If you're going up to Pioneertown/Joshua Tree and are a looking for a funky place that's quiet, clean, close to everything but still remote...and near one of Southern California's great Honky Tonk Bars....This is the where you want to be.
We've been going to the Pioneertown Inn on and off for years. For those of you who haven't been, The Pioneertown Inn is a small (18 room), simple motel that was built to house the film crews for Western movies and TV shows from the late 40's to the late 50's. It is walking distance from the old Western street that is the "center" of Pioneertown. And Yes...the bowling alley is open (more or less) on Friday and Saturdays (or something like that)
The Pioneertown Inn isn't fancy...there are no TV's or In-room phones. But if you're looking for luxury you should be in Palm Springs anyway. But the rooms are very clean, the beds are firm and comfortable and the bathrooms are spotless. And the couple who own the place may well be the nicest people in the world. I just dealt with them extensively setting up a wedding, and I swear I think we would have stayed up there for the weekend just to see their smiling faces when they waved and asked us if there was anything we needed.
I think the website is www.Pitowninn.com. I know when we were there, one woman drove up to show her friends where she "wanted to stay" if the place was open. Imagine her disappointment to drive up there and realize it was. I hope she made a reservation for the following week!
It's beautiful, it's fun, it's quiet and it's clean. I couldn't recommend it more.
