“Pebble Beach on a Budget”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2011

When I came online to write a review I was shocked that two other people were that disappointed with their stay. I don’t know if the other reviewers have ever rented a vacation rental before-but usually homeowners do not put their prized possessions/exquisite furniture in the home because of the costly damage done by renters. We had children with us and I was glad we didn’t have to worry about breaking an expensive vase.

I wasn’t disappointed at all with our stay at the Canary Cottage. The price of a room next door at the Lodge (with the same ocean view) is $965/night. For $1600/night we were able to rent this house with 6 bedrooms in the main house and two small cottages (what a deal!). This was great for our getaway with friends. The large main room was great for hanging out and late night chatting (especially after the kids went to bed). We enjoyed eating our breakfast on the large deck-the view was breath-taking. The property is very large and we enjoyed seeing the deer in the late evenings. The kitchen has two refrigerators, and lots of dishes/pots/pans etc. It was also nice having access to a washing machine and dryer (I washed all of our clothes before we headed home-no dirty laundry after our late flight).

We always look for vacation rental homes when we travel because it is usually a bargain when compared to the hotels. The accommodations were what we expected-we read the description from the website and viewed the photos and got exactly what we saw/read. If you are looking for a luxury hotel than pay the $965/night ocean view rooms at the lodge. If you are looking for a great deal on the same view than I highly suggest renting the Canary Cottage. This house would be great for a family reunion or large get-together with friends.

The place is the biggest rip off in the world. Beds and furniture all date back to the 20's when it was a "speak easy." The owners should be embarrassed about the condition. Also, the owners stay on property in one of the smaller cottages. Very strange and there is garabage and crap all of these side cottages. The view and location is second to none, but not worth feeling of living in "barn." Do not stay there, try and find something else. You will thank me.

We were excited about having a large family gathering here and envisioned an upscale "mansion" given its location along Pebble Beach's 17mile drive and the price we paid. Boy, were we disappointed. The place has so much potential, but it felt like a home that had been neglected. The furniture looks like old second hand items from the 60's and 70's and the decor was "Dollar Tree" ish. The house did not feel very clean and several folks were waking up with bug bites and feeling itchy. The 2 "guest houses" in our opinion were uninhabitable and felt more like storage sheds with beds in them. Our entire party ended up staying in the main house. The backyard view of the water is beautiful, but there is essentially no landscaping, just grass with deer droppings scattered about . We were afraid to have the kids play in the back because there was no fence between the lawn and the steep rocky drop off to the water below. To top things off, the grill on the BBQ was broken. The front yard consisted of some type of storage building and some work vans parked in the front as you drive in. There were also plenty of crows.
On a positive side, the kitchen was very well stocked with dishes/cookware/cups and the cabinets stocked with bathtowels and beachtowels. There were small bars of soap,( but no shampoo, hairdryers or any other 'luxuries"). There was also plenty of sitting and dining area. The kids enjoyed sleeping in the attic loft which was filled with games/toys/books.
This place could be awesome, but really needs some TLC. We all ended up having a decent time just because it was nice to have a place large enough to accomodate several families. We made the most out of it, but it certainly wasn't what we expected.

  • Liked — Spacious, great location, nice view.
  • Disliked — Decor, amenities and level of cleanliness was not what I would expect from this location and price range.

We try to be very up front with our customers as to what they are renting when they rent the Canary Cottage. The photographs on our website clearly are not that of a mansion. The property is a very large, but very average house in a five-star location - oceanfront, on 17-Mile Drive and adjacent to Pebble Beach Lodge. Pebble Beach is a residential enclave located in a forest, so there is indeed some wildlife, including deer, raccoons, crows, and seagulls, among others. The reviewer is correct that the property is furnished with an eclectic mix of furnishings spanning multiple decades, but it is absolutely clean. We are adamant that the cleaning crew miss nothing when they clean between guests, and we urge our guests to contact us if anything is not done to their satisfaction. We often find that when furnishings are dated, guests perceive that to indicate a lack of cleanliness. However, both we and the property owners insist on high standards for housekeeping. The Canary Cottage is a family home that was a speakeasy in the 1920's. It is still used by the owners as a family retreat, and it is their desire that other families will enjoy it as much as they do. It is definitely a place where families can relax and unwind! For those who want a more upscale application, some of our past guests have capitalized on the spacious lawn overlooking the ocean and put up a tent containing furnishings of their choice where they dine and entertain.
