“Are we all talking about the same hotel???”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2009

I don't understand how some people can rate this place so highly. Maybe there is a secret section of it that is kept away from normal travellers like me, or maybe those reviews are not real?

I stayed at the hotel for an extended weekend. The room was clean, but not modern. The TV was an old 90s style with a small screen. The fridge dates from the early 80s? The balcony was pretty big and very quiet. It was ok.

The service was friendly, but substandard. When the warm water pump broke in our building, they did not offer us a new room right away. They did not compensate us in any way for the fact that the vibrations of the defective pump woke us up at 3 am in the morning and kept us awake for a long time.

The new room they put is in next day was extremely bad. It had a dirty old carpet, 60s style. The air-conditioner was at least 30yrs old and super loud. The furniture...well, it has seen better days. The curtains had to be closed at all times, because otherwise the pool guests would have had a direct view of what is going on inside our room. I have had better rooms at travelodges, hotel 8s, ramada inns, etc for a quarter of the price.

The breakfast...cheap contintental style. Again, I would expect this at a travelodge somewhere in the hinterland where I pay 40 bucks per night, but not here.

There must be better places for that price in Palo Alto. I do not understand how they get away with charging 150+. I left this place thinking it was some shabby motel, in need of renovations.

Just spent 7 days there. Was very hesitant because of some bad reviews. Was pleasantly surprised! Staff was very helpful and courteous. Our room was wonderful - king bed, kitchen sink and refrig. dining table, couch, etc.
The gardens and ground were beautiful and well kept.
Poolside resturant service was a little slow but got better and the food was very good. Best omlets!
If I were going back to Palo Alto, I would stay here without question.

I was so excited to stay here- the pics look amazing and it seemed to offer all of what the bigger executive hotels were offering. However Dinah's is deceptive... and I wish i would have stayed somewhere else. We are local and were staying here for the weekend to relax and have a bit of a working weekend. The garden is pretty but not as big or as lush as expected, and many of the rooms are no where near the gardens. Plus they do not seem to be keeping up with greening the hotel in many areas beside the two water element areas. We were first put in a room that had a parking lot view ( for a $600 extended weekend that is crazy!!). The hotel is very expensive for the area- we could have stayed in a much better hotel for less... i.e. the weekday rate jumped to $179 a night. We had also decided to stay here because it had a courtesy breakfast... that was a lie. Instead they told us that they have danish and coffee but on the weekdays. They should not say courtesy breakfast unless that is what they offer!!!. The crib for our 15mth old was so old that it looked like it would break if we put our son in it- as did the fitness center. This place might have been the it spot in the 50's and 60's but it is not now. It is not for the young who are looking for the creature comforts of a nice hotel. I am a very easy going person who never complains and this is my first review of anything- so it should speak about the disappointment that I felt staying here.

We had a wonderful, beautiful room where we felt at home.
We very much recommend staying in the quiet, newly upgraded executive style rooms in the 800 building.
(However, the older rooms in the 600 building are not so special.)

Samir, the manager on duty, went out of his way to make sure that we were completely satisfied and happy with our stay.

we've contentedly stayed at Dinah's Garden Hotel many times in the past, mainly due to the blissful mature tropical garden environment, the quiet, and privacy of the rooms on the lagoon. It *used * to be so peaceful and lovely. So we were surprised to check into a lagoon room, 2 days ago, to discover that All landscaping (excepting a few trees here and there) have been removed from the majority of the property, all the private fences enclosing the private patios removed, all the soft moss and flowering vines removed from the exterior of the buildings - rendering the motel into a sterile nude series of bare, harsh, raw stucco boxes. WHY?????!!!!!!!!! hotel management says that the buildings are being repainted and that new gardens will be created - but I can't see how it will ever get back to the charm it had previously. There are still some rooms that have not been denuded of foliage - make sure to specify when you reserve, or you will be disapointed. the interior of the rooms remain the same (good, not great) but the ambiance is No More.

We stay in the Palo Alto area frequently because our children are Stanford students, but this was our first time at Dinah's as we got a very good internet rate on a room. It is not a hotel but rather a two-story motel off El Camino (behind and on the same grounds with Trader Vic's restaurant) with lovely water features and beautiful plantings. Our standard room was quite small and had a queen rather than king-sized bed as printed on our confirmation, but it was late and we were too tired to ask for a switch. The desk staff was cordial and probably would have made the correction. Although the room was tiny, it was brilliantly organized to include everything one would want (including a work desk with free T1 internet access and a refrigerator), was meticulously clean, and had been charmingly updated. Each room appears to have a private patio or balcony with chairs, table, and a lovely view of the garden, pool, or stream. Each evening we found a fresh supply of ice tucked in the refrigerator. Parking is free and ample, which stands in pleasant contrast to some hotels in the area. There is an onsite laundry room for guest use if needed.

Stayed with my wife and two teenage sons for 3 nights (two separate rooms). Beautiful hotel--much nicer than you would expect coming off the busy El Camino Real. Pool is heated and the breakfast at the poolside restaurant was excellent. Easy 30-40 minute drive from the airport. Not cheap, but there online you got an upgrade to the deluxe room (slightly larger, small wetbar) for the regular room price. Front desk staff was extremely helpful.

  • Liked — Lush gardens and pools make you feel you are far away.
