The Westin Palo Alto is a cool, relaxing jewel of a hotel within walking distance of both the village of Palo Alto and the Stanford campus. Once you understand that this is not a convention, tourist-group or family-vacation hotel, but rather a quiet, restful and even charming place to be while you're in this part of the Peninsula, you'll be fine with it. The reviews below, complaining variously about things that aren't ideal for kids, or of smaller rooms, are missing the essential comfort of the place. Breakfasts were perfectly fine, the bathroom sparkled, the bed was matchless, and the service was faultlessly polite. Weekend rates are a bargain, but on weekdays this Westin reverts to a higher, business-class level. I was there for five nights with three other colleagues, and everyone loved it.

“Okay, No Kids Club”

This Westin is advertised as a Kids Club so we assumed it would be child-friendly. First, the Westin Starwood site would not let us book a standard room with a crib because we would be over the 2-person limit. With an 18-month old. We had to book through Hotels.com and lose out on starwood points. A direct call to the hotel revealed that of course they allow 2 adults and 1 baby in a room. Of course. However, we also had to ask 3 times (before booking, upon arriving and a call down from the room) for the requested Heavenly crib.

Our little guy was supposed to receive a Kids Club pack (hat, distractions for the room) on arrival. He didn't receive this until we checked out and someone finally realized we had a kid.

The pool is horrible for kids. Tiny, cramped courtyard complete with some kind of Muscle-Beach style workout where you can ride an exercise bike next to the tiny pool (next to our lunch table). The pool has NO SHALLOW END - none! It's all or nothing. Not for kids.

Lastly, the little courtyards are nice and delightful places for an afternoon snack, but the rooms are small and cramped for a very small family. I'd stay here for business but probably go next door to the Sheraton with my family.

The location can't be beat for a game at Stanford and exploring downtown Palo Alto. Ignore the staff at the desk and take the well-lit underpass by the medical center to downtown - a 5-minute walk.

    • Disliked — Not kid-friendly, Kids Club and afterthought, pool area cramped and not kid-friendly

“convenient Silicon Valley Hotel”

Recently returned to this hotel for business. It is a very good business hotel for those visiting Silicon Valley. Convenient walking distance to good restuarants on University Avenue. Bed was comfortable and an exceptional amount of light for a hotel room (my big pet peeve on business travel is dark hotel rooms, especially over the desk) Staff was helpful and my car was waiting for me for an early morning flight. Main inconcenience is a small bar which closes relatively early for business travelers with a late arrival.

“Lovely Little Hotel”

My husband and I had a terrific 4 night stay at this hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the rooms were immaculate. Everything in this hotel is SMALL BUT LOVELY: the restaurant , the workout room, and the pool area. My only complaint...........because I am "a nut about noise" ....is that you can hear the guests above you walking. Next time.......becauses there will be a 2nd stay there............I would request a 5th floor room or suite!

“Would go back”

I was there with a group of people attending an athletic event at neighboring Stanford university. Proximity to the university was a main reason for our choice to stay at the Westin. Staff there were very accommodating: courteous and attentive. They seem to welcome back a lot of regulars, and there were a lot of friendly interchange between staff and the other guests. The structure of the room is a bit odd: quite a maze to get to our rooms. This did result in a lot of "short" corridors that minized foot traffic in front of rooms. Room was good: clean, and the beds were nice. Bathroom was fabulous. Pool was smaller than expected and the breakfast buffet wasn't anything extraordinary. But it's an easy 10 minute walk to University Avenue where there's a multitude of restaurants to choose from. Would go back!
