“Good place to lounge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2011

Joya has a very nice lounge area, great sangria, good tapas- although some are not as authentic spanish as you may expect, but tasty nevertheless. The restaurant is also really neat, their paella is quite good. Overall, a trendy place in Palo Alto to go to if you cannot make it all the way to San Francisco.

“nice setting, food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2011

I have been going to Joya for at least a year. The cuisine, while it does not change very often (no specials or seasonal menus), is very tasteful and enjoyable. The restaurant itself is airy and with many windows and, if you're lucky enough, a couple of outside seats right on top of University Avenue itself. Service is pleasant enough, and it's a nice place to go out to lunch to on a nice day.

“Great place to share tapas with friends.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2011

First of all, Joya is NOT in East Palo Alto, it is in the center of downtown Palo Alto. East Palo is an entirely different city in another county!
My husband and I live within walking distance of Joya and go there often, usually with visiting friends. We always order from the tapas menu and share everything. My favorites are the chili salted calamari, the guacamole with New World chips, the gazpacho (which is the best anywhere). Actually, it is difficult to name all our favorites because there are so many to choose from. There is a very stylish full bar if you only want to go for drinks.
When the weather is warm the dining room is opened up to the outside, which is lovely.

“wrong name, better tapas elsewhere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2011

the name is joya, not la joya.

Authentic spanish tapas can be had two miles away at iberia in menlo park. otherwise, enjoy the slick room and good service. food is average, which is a problem at this price level.

“Most Expensive Tapas I've ever had”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2010

Joya has a great atmosphere and we had a great time. Good thing we had appetizers and drinks at our Hotel before coming because we spent almost $180 on Tapas, Sangria and Dessert and had we not eaten first would be starved...now yes, I aggree that tapas portions are small but for the price it was ridiculous...skip Tapas and go for the main entrees...that's what we'll do next time :)

We loved what we had:
papas bravas yukon gold potatoes, pimenton, with garlic 4
mushrooms al ajillo sautéed with fresh shallots and thyme 8
croquetas potatoes, pasilla peppers, english peas, smoked mozzarella cheese 6.5
dungeness crab cakes two crab cakes, pequillo peppers, corn, ginger chipotle aïoli 13
ceviche raw seafood cured in citrus, choice of: mango chili red snapper, coconut rock shrimp & bass, or halibut with roasted tomatillos 9.5 ea / 21 sampling of all three
scallops 9
churros with hot chocolate argentinean doughnuts alongside an ibarra chocolate dipping sauce 8
ice cream cookie ‘sliders’ trio of ice cream sandwiches with house-made ice creams of colombian coffee, ibarra chocolate & dulce de leche 8
joya tres leches flan traditional cream flan atop rich chocolate cake 8
caramelized pineapple butter cake served alongside house-made coconut ice cream 8
drinks: sangria, soda, coffee etc.
