“Beware...funky and eclectic, but not for everyone's tastes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

I had my first stay at the Viceroy in Palm Springs with a group of ten people. Pulling up to the property you immediately know this isn't your normal hotel. The front door was very tough to identify. The property is a series of structures linked together inside the closed perimeter. From the outside you think it's a small boutique hotel. Once inside you realize it occupies nearly 3/4 of a decent sized city block on the edge of a residential area.

the entrance lobby is quite small, again giving the feel of a tiny property. Once you move inside and start to move to your room, do you realize that it actually is a very spacious property. The rooms are both free standing cottages or connected suites within larger buildings. They all open onto courtyards or pools in what are very nice gardens and lawns.

Once you enter the room, the funk begins. The property has been around for years, and the decor is retro all the way. The rooms are bright, tiled, wild patterns, eclectic light fixtures, etc. Despite the age and retro of the property, things are subtely modern and in very good working order.

The Viceroy isn't for everyone. There is a quiet reserve to the property that lends itself to adults only. I wouldn't bring a family or kids here. The rooms are tacky/chic, fun and spacious. The social scene appears to be around the pools, small courtyard pools where people watching wins the day.

If you are exploring Palm Springs and you want an island of funky civility, the Viceroy is for you. Thing Hollywood weekenders, or hipsters from NYC escaping the weather for a weekend. Enjoyed dinner there one night. Food was elegant and tasty, wine list surprisingly light, service just OK.

Room Tip: I had a cabin on the edge of the property. It was spacous and private, but pricey....room 504.

Seven of us enjoyed a wonderful private dinner party in celebration of my wife's 60th birthday at the Viceroy. Food, service and atmosphere were impeccable, as we had a private table in a cabana beside the pool. The whole place makes you feel like you've stepped back into 1957, when sunglasses, head scarves, cigarette holders (holding Viceroys, no doubt) and white tuxedo jackets were de rigeur for dinner. That's a compliment, by the way, not a criticism. There's nothing run-down or kitschy about the Viceroy... it's very elegant and well done. I half expected to run into Deborah Kerr strolling by the table, or Bogie and Bacall in the next booth. No doubt they were actually there 57 years ago! Either way, it was a lovely experience, if a bit on the pricey side.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay here at end Dec/ beginning of Jan. The room was large, clean and stylish, however hanging space for clothes was extremely limited. The shower was superb - hot and very powerful. Without exception the staff were friendly and helpful. Our room backed onto the street which meant that we did not have a view (not a problem as we only used the room for sleeping/ changing) and we didn't hear any traffic noise at all. It was mildly inconvenient that the room was regularly not serviced until very late in the afternoon. If one is to be really picky then it appears that some of the internal and external finishes could do with a touch up but this did not detract from our wonderful holiday at all.

It's the perfect desert getaway....Beautiful rooms...Great service...Great staff...The choice of swimming pool areas is amazing...and the water temperature was perfect!

The menu could be a little more vegan/vegetarian friendly....can we make that happen? :)

A great Hotel, not too big so good attention to detail, good clean rooms and helpfull Staff.
Good location within walking distance to Palm Springs.

Three pools, some are designated adults only and good Spa, Inside and outside dining areas are perfect.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the pool

We had an amazing stay at this gem of a place. It was our first time to Palm Springs and was sceptical after reading all the negative reviews but I can honestly admit that this is truly the best hotel I've ever stayed in. Room was spacious and trendy, we booked the Regency 1 King bedroom on the ground floor. The bed was big enough for all 4 of us to sleep comfortably in. The patio opens up to a great view & access to the pool.

Hotel staff are friendly and accommodating especially since we had travelled from far with 2 small children. Every staff we spoke to would offer their version of what are the must-dos in Palm Springs. The room and general ambience around the ground gave us a feel like we're living in an episode of Mad Men and somewhat Gatsby-like too. Location is superb but we wished we had another night at the hotel to enjoy all the facilities. Especially love the lemon trees around the hotel grounds.

Will definitely return to this amazing dreamlike place.

I just spent two nights at the Viceroy and attended their New Year's Eve party. I had a good time and I liked the property, but it's just too expensive for what you get.

There are very few amenities - for instance, in the bathroom, there was lotion and hand soap, but no other soap, shampoo, etc. I'm bald so I'll wash my head with hand soap, but I imagine some other people might object to this. The swimming pools and hot tubs are nice, and the bar/restaurant are cute. Ice is available only at the bar.

The staff was fine, but was rather rude on a couple of occasions. Rather than feeling welcome, I felt like I was in the way at times. I know they were setting up for the party, but there are good ways and bad ways to ask guests to switch areas. The spa never returned either my phone call or my partner's, but when we arrived and went there in person to make an appointment, they had plenty of slots available.

The New Year's Eve party was fun and well run.

So, although I enjoyed myself, I think the price was too high for the services I received.

Room Tip: I would ask for a room that doesn't face the street. Mine faced the main pool and that was nice...
