My wife and I had a late lunch at Sammy G's on a warm Friday afternoon. We were seated by a young, nice; but non-energetic hostess who seated us at a patio 2 top next to the Palm Tree fountain. We sat, and sat, and sat while 2 waiters and a bus boy stood around watching us sit. Finally the water girl came over, apologized for the wait, set up the table and filled our water glasses. The we sat some more. The 2 idle servers studiously ignored our hand waving. What happened to teamwork Sammy? What happened to peripheral vision? Even the hostess passed us while seating a new party and avoided our eyes as she knew we were being ignored. Just as we were getting up to leave, our server appeared, apologized for the wait, explaining he had been handling a large party inside. From that point on, things went quite well. I had a beer on tap, my wife had a glass of Riesling, both which arrived promptly. I ordered the Calamari with the spicy sweet & sour, garlic tomato sauce and my wife ordered the Egg Plant Rollatini. While we were waiting for our food, a hamburger plate was delivered to the next table-it was beautifully presented-I almost asked to change my order. The food was delivered, hot and perfectly prepared. The prices were reasonable and the décor and atmosphere were desert perfect. The only thing lacking was some personal warmth on the part of staff-with one exception-the water/bus girl who was vivacious, made frequent water call backs and even told our waiter about my wife's desire for a 2nd glass of wine. Other than that, there were few smiles, little customer/staff conversation (some staff to staff talk when boredom was obviously at its peak) and no hint of the energetic, vital, happy, personality plus place we once knew when we lived here.
