“What a peaceful retreat in the Californian desert”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for four nights and what an idyllic stop. Off the main Palm Spring strip but close enough not to be too long a drive - a mile maximum. Refurbished chalet style rooms all grouped round lovely tranquil gardens and the swimming pool. The rooms are spacious, fresh and simplistic with modern fittings and great walk in shower. An ample breakfast or bagels, juice, coffee, and yoghurt is served on your patio or by the pool. The perfect place to kick back and relax.

In my first review of The Horizon Hotel I wrote 'can't wait to go back.' Well, it took three years but we made it! To be honest we seriously considered other mid-century modern-type hotels that were closer to the downtown area. We thought that way we could walk into town for dinner, shopping, etc. But none of them looked as nice as The Horizon and we were right. It's only a few minute drive to downtown and The Horizon is so quiet and peaceful ... and you can't beat the setting and the view. It was very quiet during the day. We were typically the only ones by the pool. Towards the weekend it got more busy but it's never over-crowded and the clientele are late 20s and up, and international. No kids allowed which is a highlight! Breakfast served on your patio or poolside every day. Enjoy!

Room Tip: I would recommend a room with a patio that faces the pool if you can request it. Some of the patios...

Thank you for your review. We are thrilled that you returned and hope that we see you as regular guest. We pride ourselves in offering tranquility on the property and hope that all guest get to experience that. We are less than a mile from the heart of downtown, but feels like we are very secluded by our vast grounds. thanks again for choosing us.

Hotel is very classy excellent unique rooms . Great pool and hot tub and grounds are spacious so you don't feel like you are even at a hotel . For sure I will return. Go for the room with fireplace on a cool winter night. The outdoor shower in many of the rooms are nice touch.

We had a very pleasant and restful 3 days here. We liked the comfortable rooms, the individual patio and the pool. The excellent breakfasts served at the time chosen, in the room or on the patio or pool made a great relaxing start to the day.
Staff were lovely and so helpful.
Must stay again!

Classy rooms, comfortable, great service and relaxing. This is our favorite hotel in Palm Springs. Not a party hotel, but great for relaxing by the pool, reading a book and having a drink (b.y.o.). Borrow bikes free of charge from the front desk and ride around town. Simple but perfect breakfast in your private patio in the morning. Wonderful hotel and staff.

This is a difficult one to review. The room was nice, I really liked it. It was difficult to fault, bed comfortable, big fridge, bathroom big with an indoor shower (with a glass wall outside!) and an outdoor shower. Everything was clean. But, something (what...?) made it feel not as good as other hotels we have stayed in recently.
Maybe it was the pool area that we didn't feel able to use (the grass just cut made it appear a little dirty). There were no staff around unless you went to reception and no one around after 8pm. A bar, fire pit etc that could have made it lovely and sociable but were never open. There was a lack of atmosphere - at one point I even wondered if anyone else was staying there. No shampoo ( ok only a minor point but didn't notice until after hours, expected some to be put in next time it was serviced but again didn't realise it hadn't been until after hours again). Plenty of parking (secure) but carry own bags in and out.
Breakfast was provided but only a croissant or a bagel (not enough) we asked for two but still only one arrives. Maybe we are just greedy! Got coffee that we didn't order though!
The grounds were nicely planted - I saw a few hummingbirds!
Basically - nice, comfortable, clean but more of an upmarket motel than nice hotel. Don't expect luxury.

We really wanted to like the Horizon. It gets great reviews and it is a lovingly restored property. First, I agree with a previous reviewer that despite my appreciation of mid-century modern it needs to be done to perfection, otherwise the sparseness can come off a lack of attention to detail. Also, I like my hotel experiences to be a bit more lux. Some of the details that needed attention included the stains in the carpets and sofa, the dings in the white walls, mounting squares holding down the decorative orbs on the shelves (really?) and the cheap plastic cups & poor quality coffee in the room. The continental breakfast is a nice touch but it was rather basic – as if we were staying at a Hilton Garden Inn. We also noticed a very nice bar area by the pool with no one there. Turns out they closed it and will be re-opening ‘soon’ when they get a license. So, in the interim (or permanently for that matter) offer a free happy hour like many properties do. I would be a nice way to let guest socialize. One of our biggest issues was the lack of staff. There is no interaction with the hotel staff unless you go to the front office. There is no one around so you feel like you are staying more at a motel than a boutique resort – frankly that is what makes boutique properties unique - a great and helpful staff. The front desk was very nice if you asked… but you never saw anyone around unless you went to the office. On the plus side the bed was comfortable (pillows not so much), indoor/outdoor shower cool and the highlight… sitting in front of our room (3A) overlooking the pool was delightful. All in all, if you love mid century modern you’ll love the look of this property. If you want a higher level of service or a bit more lux, try another place.

Room Tip: 3A is supposed to be one of the nicest...the fireplace was cool.

Thank you for you feedback. We are looking to improve on many of these issues including improving our breakfast selection, more routine room maintenance, and now that we have received our license we can serve a complimentary adult beverage. Unfortunately the laws are very strict about serving alcohol without a license, even complimentary. Our bar should be open very soon.
