“romantic Italian villa in the desert”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2003

My husband and I had never been to the desert, and coming from New York
to LA for business, we decided to make a detour to Palm Springs. We
liked the idea of a small intimate hotel as opposed to a large chain,
and took a chance on Villa Royale, which we found on the internet. This
hotel exceeded our expectations. Slightly off the main drag, the quiet
and calm of its Italian villa setting made us feel as if we were in the
Italian countryside. Rooms line three courtyards; swimming pools are in
the center of two, while ours had a fountain and beautiful foliage and
gardens. In fact, the entire property is so lovingly tended; we arrived
just before the high season began(early October) and watched the
gardener and her staff in awe. One evening we wandered the grounds and
explored the villa's many nooks and crannies, peaceful hidden spots
with benches, small statues, and even a little footbridge. The hot tub
was nestled away from the pools in a private leafy glade. There were
many shady and cool places to enjoy when the temperature was over 90
degrees, including small tables with potted plants outside each room.
The accommodations range from a room, most around the larger pool, to
one and two bedroom suites. We asked to see a few rooms, just for fun,
and the staff was very accommodating. Every suite or room is
different-individually furnished with antiques, some in a Moorish
style-filigree lamps and plates, Oriental rugs-while others had more of
a country feeling. The staff, on duty 24 hours a day, was eager to
accommodate us-I found this to be true from my first phone call to
reserve a room. The friendly attitude extended to every staff member,
from the person maintaining the pools to the woman serving us
breakfast(included in the room rate). We could have room service or
poolside dining, and a choice of eggs, cereals, or fruit plates, with a
beverage.
Europa, the 3 star restaurant attached to Villa Royale, was equally delightful. In fact, while there were numerous dining choices in town, we preferred the informal elegance of this restaurant--a beautiful terracotta interior, romantic outdoor seating among impressive plantings, trees and tiny lights. The food was excellent, fresh and beutifully presented. Here the staff was terrific, too, friendly and efficient. We had dinner there both nights.
Because of the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, we wound up staying at
Villa Royale an extra night. Our only criticism would be the inability
to open our windows(we don't like air conditioning) to the balmy
evening air. Otherwise, the Villa Royale is a gem in the sand of the
California desert.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Villa Royale in mid August and we absolutely loved it! It was a girls weekend and we stayed in the studio cottage with twin beds and it was very comfortable. The rooms were nicely furnished with antiques and there was even a private enclosed patio to enjoy the evening stars. The main attraction however was the practically private pool we shared with about 4 other rooms in our private court yard. It was wonderful to have a midnight swim, enjoy the moon and stars and have the pool to ourselves since it seems everyone else was asleep. The pool is available 24 hours as long as you respect the quietness and serenity this hotel promotes. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and if you want to get away from the kids this is the place to go, this hotel is an adults preferred hotel. Will go back again!

My wife and I stayed at the Villa Royale in August and were very pleased. We stayed in a royale room which was spacious with tasteful antique furniture, hard floors, and a servicable kitchen. The daily breakfasts served on the outdoor patio were pleasant and convenient.
The grounds of the hotel, which is reminiscent of an Old World European villa, featured natural garden paths and fountains, several pools and a hot tub--great for an evening stroll or a late-night swim. The hotel employees were pleasant and helpful, and there was even a free high-speed internet connection available in the main office for catching up on e-mail or learning about the available attractions in Palm Springs. We would definitely be inclined to stay at the Villa Royale Inn in the future.

I have been back to the Villa Royale Inn several times this year. If you want a quiet hotel with beautiful gardens , fountains and the feeling of being in Italy with a tropical presence...then this is the place for you! They have massages available in the privacy of your room or private patio day or evening. They provide robes, and are extremely friendly and helpful. The included breakfast is hearty and healthy served around one of the 2 pools .The down bedding is lovely but bring your own down pillow as they do not have these available. The hotel restaurant open for Sunday brunch and dinner was superb! I plan on returning and sharing this wonderful hide a way with dear friends every opportunity to return to Palm Springs. Barbara A. St Louis, Mo.
