“Quiet Time Share”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

We purchased a week in a two bedroom villa at this resort on the secondary market. Like another reviewer, we also arrived early but were treated well by the check-in staff. We requested a second floor unit with a view if possible. They took our phone number and we were in the unit by 3:00 (official check in is at 4:00). We were in the Jasmine section which is set aside from the rest of the vacation complex. Since we asked for a quiet setting, this suited us. We were a little surprised to see two doors to our unit, but found that we actually had a one bedroom unit with a full kitchen, living room, dining room and then a studio one bedroom unit with a connecting door. This was a little different than we expected, but worked OK for us. The studio unit had a fold out coach and could technically sleep four folks, but I do not think that this would be suitable for two couples (no privacy and the space is small). The other one bedroom unit was very spacious with a huge bathroom and soaking tub. There was lots of space on the balcony which we did not use since the weather was sunny but cool.

The kitchen was rather sparsely equipped. We own a condo that we rent on the Oregon Coast and for example we provide enough dishes and cutlery for 12. This unit just had service for six people. It also did not provide extras like cling wrap and foil. That is likely not a problem if you have traveled by car and can take extras, but we flew down from Washington.

On the plus size the unit was spacious, clean, of high standard of furniture, comfortable beds, a washer and dryer, decent size televisions, (but only one DVD player in the living area and none in the bedroom), and attractive decor. It was also very quiet. We did not hear our neighbors! This was a huge plus for me since I am very sensitive to noise. The pool was nearby and was not crowded (the weather was cool).

On the con side, the kitchen could have been better equipped and my husband complained about the shower. Our unit overlooked the golf course, but the front of the unit with no windows overlooked the mountains. I would have preferred the mountain view. People need to know that there is no maid service unless you pay extra. We actually prefer the privacy of no maid service and I don't mind keeping the place clean and tidy myself. However, others may need to factor in an additional cost if they want maid service.

Overall our experience was very positive. My husband and I felt very comfortable in this unit and there were tons of wonderful things to do in Palm Desert from the Living Desert (a must see) to the Joshua Tree National Park (also a must see). We will definitely come back and will consider renting again here.

Room Tip: I would describe the type of situation that you would like to the staff as you check in. We requeste...

We have stayed severel years in February at the time shares in Palm Springs. We rent, not own. Usually we have been very happy. Last year they offered us a deal to come beck this year. We needed to take the "90" minute presentation. OK we said. You would think when they want your business they would be more accomodating. We arrived around 2 pm. Many times we arrive at a hotel at this time and are allowed to check in. It doesn't seem to work that way at timeshares. I think their motto is to keep the customer out as long as possible. We wanted to get in and settled and then do some grocery shopping. Well we didn't get in til around 4 pm. We were shopping at 5 pm. By the time we decided to call for a reservation for dinner everything was booked up. They put us over in the "Jasmine" property. Rooms are smaller. It needs a makeover. Everything closes at 4 pm. I don't think they wanted our business. Needless to say we did not buy. If they treat potential customers like this how do they treat owners?

Room Tip: Ask not to stay at the Jasmine part.

We are sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay at Marriott's Desert Springs Villas. While a typical hotel check-in is at 4 pm and check-out at noon, cleaning a villa with a full kitchen requires additional time to ensure each unit is cleaned to the highest Marriott standards. We do not restrict anyone from checking-in as soon as a villa is available; however, our teams work to ensure our villas are ready by the posted 4 pm check-in time.

The Marriott Villas II was a great place to stay. While they did phone to ask if we wanted to listen to a presentation about time shares, they did not hound us when I was not interested. We were able to move our room so the balcony faced the golf course rather than the street, and also were able to get a ground floor room as requested. The room was clean and pleasant, and staff were very helpful.

A very nice property but many units are being updated and the construction crews are loud and all over the place. No elevator to the second floor units is an inconvenience and tough for those with heavy luggage. The interior was very nice and the appliances were all brand new. We would stay there again but only after the renovations are complete and only if we could be assured of a ground floor unit.

The facility was beautiful. Our villa backed onto the golf course and the setting was wonderful. Everything was well maintained and modern. They had finished extensive re-furbishing of our unit and were working hard to refurbish other ones while we were there.
For the price of the accommodation, there was virtually no service. We rented our unit from a time-share owner for the week and are not familiar with the time-share routine, so maybe its normal to have no maid service for 7 days? For $490/night list price (we paid less than $100) you would expect maid service. After 4 days, I called requesting clean towels and was told that there is a $7 fee for new towels. Sure, not a lot of money, but even $65/night hotels give you fresh towels and wash clothes daily.
The other thing that irked us was the attitude of the other guests. Many of the time share "owners" looked down their noses at us lowly "renters". In reality they don't own the place either.
There was one pool right next to a playground, so naturally we would take our 2 year old to that pool so we could go to the playground as well. As soon as we set up our towels, the other guests flocked away. Several of them told us that children, should be at one of the other pools. Generally the attitude was a bit snobby there.

My husband and I and another couple travel extensively together and have stayed at other Marriott timeshare properties. Marriott consistently provides a pleasant, if not luxury, experience in its timeshare units. On the other hand, one should rightly expect a more special experience in a JW Marriott hotel-related property. This was not the case at the Desert Springs.

Certainly, the Marriott Vacation Club properties are separate from the hotels, but it is disappointing to have thin towels, a dishwasher that was sub-par, slow service, a meager supply of kitchen utensils, old and cheap-looking pool chairs, tidying only once a week and no new towels mid-week except for a fee, floors seeming to be clean but quite dirty really when you wiped a spill up and noticed the basic dirt beyond your spill, and other disappointments.

The setting, adjacent to the JW Marriott hotel and the golf course, is lovely and the grounds are certainly well maintained. It is clear that the units, which seem to be on the old side, have had some upgrades, and that is appreciated. The bed was very comfortable and the bathrooms very luxurious. Our check-in was swift and people were very nice--a real positive at all the Marriotts, the friendliness of the staff it hires. The little market had Starbuck's and all the major national papers, both real pluses to us.

All in all, an OK place that was comfortable and met our needs, but not on a par with what one would expect at a JW Marriott property.

We stayed here last summer after a fun-filled driving tour of California with the kids.Nice place to cool our heels.
This property deserves salutations.Everything was absolutely perfect. The spacious rooms outdo themselves.Everything screams 'class!'.Seriously. (not boring history class, either).
Art niches, high inset ceilings, quality floorings, solid doors, thermal panes,a huge king bed, serious lighting,a balcony with real, padded and COMFORTABLE furniture,a beautiful view of the mountains,BBQ,golf, and everything worked.ALL facilities were nearby. We LIVED at the pool,in the water with a cold drink or burger in hand from the nearby bar/grill.Need I say more? We even ended up buying a Marriott timeshare as a result of our experience here.Bye bye,Wyndham and all of their rules and ever-changing fees.We sold both of them.Marriott rules!
An absolutely perfect stay with NO problems.

Room Tip: If you go during the summer, bring lots of sunblock,be ready to get a tan and spend your time in the...
