“Absolutely Amazing and Relaxing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2012

JW Marriott had the perfect mix of luxury, relaxation, and location in Palm Desert. It was a nice getaway. Spent time in the sun, golfing, shopping - perfect long weekend away! Staff is friendly and amenities are the best. I'm already planning my trip back!

We are just finishing a stay at the JW Marriott Desert Springs. This hotel represents an outstanding value. We have stayed at some beautiful resorts over the years and this one compares very favorably. The grounds are maintained very well, the wildlife, landscaping, and the views are spectacular. The employees were, in general, very service-minded, helpful, and friendly.

The resort exceeded my expectations in almost every respect. That said, I expected a Marriott resort - not anything along the lines of the super-posh Ritz or Four Season variety. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a well-maintained resort with a very professional staff (a staff that might rank up there with what you would find at a Ritz.)

We were let down by the resort only a couple times and I would recommend that management look at each of these areas for potential improvements.

My wife went to the spa once for a massage. She was greeted by a woman who registered her and then promptly asked if she wanted to include a 20% gratuity on her bill. Now, my wife has never met a spa that she didn't like and she has frequented some of the best around and she was completely taken aback by the aggressiveness this receptionist showed. She had never encountered anything like it. She felt like she was cornered by the woman and wouldn't get a good massage unless she paid the gratuity...BEFORE THE SERVICE WAS PROVIDED. She had arrived for the massage right at the designated time and her masseuse reprimanded her immediately, saying "we better get going because you're starting to eat into your massage time." The masseuse (named Mary) then proceeded to give her a very rough treatment and the whole experience was uncomfortable. When she got back to the room my wife called the manager and complained, got the gratuity removed, and declined some deal that he offered her. She said the manager handled it well, but she still cancelled her next appointment.

The other area management might take a look at is the concierge services. One night we wanted to get some Mexican food in an outdoor setting since the weather was spectacular. The concierge recommended a great place but it was booked. She then emailed my wife a list of other choices with outdoor seating. When my wife called the concierge for more details and to make a choice, the concierge seemed put out at the idea of actually calling the restaurant to make the reservation. So, my wife called and got a slot at Guillermo's. The issue is that when we got there, they didn't have outdoor seating (some was under construction). We had told both the concierge and the restaurant that we wanted to sit outside and both seemed perfectly happy to give us misleading information.

Anyway, I've spent way too much time on the negatives because in general this place was excellent. I play golf and really loved the Palms golf course on the property (never played the Valley course but heard the Palms was the more scenic of the two.) The kids loved the pools, the birds, the putt-putt golf, the lawn sports, and the freedom of roaming this massive complex without the burden of hovering parents. We'd definitely return.

The lobby is very nice & the grounds are beautiful. I agree with other reviews that the rooms are a little dated. We were in town for the Bnp Paribas tennis tournament. Allison at the front desk was very helpful & had the schedule of play & directions to the stadium. We tried to play tennis at the resort, but you can't reserve courts until you arrive. We got in at 6:05 & the club house closed at 6pm, so we weren't able to reserve a court Sat AM. We wanted to play on the grass courts ( they have 2), but you can only play on them in the afternoon. We tried to play on Sunday morning, but the courts were wet & they cancelled our court time. It was a lot of trouble trying to play on their courts & it never worked out.

I made a reservation 3 months ago and was assured all rooms had a nice view. Upon check in we walked into a room overlooking a mini golf course which was fine but the parking lot and highway view was certainly not what we were expecting. i went back to the front desk to let ask them if I could upgrade to a view other than a parking lot and a dated room and I was told the rooms were all recently updated and all rooms were sold out.
So disappoainted. Don't be fooled by the 'jw'.
Also the pool was like going to a town pool....a wristband needed to be worn....I felt like I was at a carnival, not like any 'resort'

The flowers and grounds were beautiful but that's it.

This hotel is VERY dated, expected more for a JW M and the price. Rooms seemed new, but hallways, lobbies, etc. very tired. It is huge and spread out, almost feels like a Vegas hotel. Ask for a room in a wing near whatever services you might use, main pools, spa, tennis, etc., or you will be walking for 20+ minutes if you are on the other side of the hotel. That said, the service was excellent other than the pool food service. With all the resorts to choose from in the area, I will not return to this one. The other Marriott property, the Renaissance Esmerelda, seemed much nicer and newer.

This resort hotel has a real Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hide split personality. The resort grounds are very nice with beautiful views of the mountains, the lobby is airy, modern and inviting, but as you go into the wings to your room, Motel X welcomes you. Narrow long corridors where you have to squeeze past overflowing housekeeping carts any time of day, empty flower beds yawning like open graves, carpet that must have come from liquidation sale at Moe's Ugly Rugs in 1975. The biggest problem however is incompetent management. The hotel is undergoing renovations, so who in his right mind would put resort guests in a room right above the jackhammer work? We complained and were given another room, but it took two hours, endless waiting at the front desk and spoiled the mood for the day. Everything takes for ever at this hotel. We went to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. The place was three-quarters full, but there was just one waiter running off his feet trying to serve the guests. Half an hour later more waiters arrived and one of them languidly informed us that they start at 8:30 a.m. What does this mean? A restaurant is either open or closed, if it is open, you should not wait 40 minutes for your omelette. The amazing thing is that this is a quite expensive hotel, and JW Marriott is supposed to be Marriott's chain luxury brand. However, this one does not even measure up to its modest $175 a night cousins in Midwest.

Room Tip: Try to get one in the main building, facing the mountains.

Our family stayed at the JW Marriott during Easter spring break. They had the Easter bunny parachute out of the sky and drop onto the grassy area in front of the hotel. It was organized and they had a great Easter egg hunt for the kids. The grounds were beautiful. There are upscale stores for shopping. The lounge area is great for adults...good martinis and appetizers. Only downfall to consider when staying here is they had no kitchenette, so we had to go out to eat for every meal. It adds up when you have kids and most of the restaurants weren't very kid friendly (upscale and pricey) except for the pool bar and grill area. They do have a little golf area for kids. There is a Starbucks inside, which is where we ate breakfast. You'll have fun here!

Room Tip: If you have kids, ask to be close to kids pool.
