We were spending the day at Monterey aquarium, and wanted to find somewhere nice for lunch, rather than cramming into the aquarium canteen. We also wanted something leaning towards healthy... there had been a lot of fast food in the days preceding.
Pacific Awakenings met all our requirements. Just a few minutes walk from the aquarium, it was easy to pop out to, but not as busy as the heaving lunch places on Cannery Row. We unfortunately arrived a couple of minutes after they had closed for the afternoon, but seeing our disappointed faces, the staff agreed to serve us anyway.
It was a warm day, and we opted to sit outside in their sheltered sunny courtyard. Although by the entrance to a shopping mall, the murals, cheerful parasols, and little birds hopping around looking for crumbs made it feel peaceful and relaxing. Service was fast and friendly.
A warning; the portions are HUGE! We had a massive taco salad, an enormous garden salad, and two root beers (which were refilled without us having to ask) for $30, including the tip. The salads were great, fresh and tasty. The side of potatoes tasted as if they had been sitting on a hot plate for a while, but it was mid-afternoon and after closing time by this point, so I wouldn't hold it against them. We left behind a lot of food - one salad would have been plenty for two people.
