“FISHWIFE RESTAURANT…SKIP THE HAPPY HOUR, GO FOR THE DINNER…”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2014

We decided to take in a “Happy-Hour” on a weekday. Much to our surprise we came upon a little, well-established, establishment – The Fishwife Restaurant, located in Pacific Grove, Ca. (known to the locals as “PG”). At 5 PM the place was beginning to get busy. So we quickly ordered a couple of glasses of local Monterey wine and followed it up with the Fishwife Boston (that’s the white one) Clam Chowder. It was some of the best Chowder we’ve ever had. Plenty of clams, just the right texture and incredible flavor – it could be a meal without having anything else on the menu. We followed this with the Fried very-thick Calamari and then a Shrimp, Scallops and Crab sautéed in a Lobster Sauce main course. Our visit became more than a happy hour, but a delightful dinner of scrumptious foods. It’s a definite place to go to when in PG or the Monterey Peninsula area. While the place is a bit ‘past it’s prime’ (this brings down it’s rating). Just to mention, the service was over-the-top. On our rating scale of “A” to “F” the Fishwife gets an “B+”. We would definitely return for a Happy Hour or just a dinner.

“Perfect location for the tourists”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014

In March we had friends (a couple) visit us from Reno, NV, and one of them used to work at the Fishwife Restaurant near Asilomar many years ago in the office. We ordered appetizers and main courses. The food was very good and the service was average. The capacity for the restaurant is 64 people and it is the size of a small old house. It was full to capacity at the tables and the bar which made it roaring loud on a Friday night. I don't particularly like being in a crowded and loud environment to eat dinner. It didn't help that the table directly behind us 5 inches away had a screaming toddler with the parents doing nothing to quiet him down. They just smiled like "Isn't he cute?" We had to like yell to have a conversation with our friends so it was not very relaxing. Actually I felt exhausted by the time we left. We took some food home for leftovers because they do give you generous portions. We like the one in Seaside better because the tables are farther apart and it is quieter. I probably wouldn't return to the Fishwife at Asilomar. I know it is very popular and close to the conference center, but we can have fish for dinner elsewhere in a more pleasant atmosphere.
The décor/atmosphere looks very outdated...like it needs a makeover.
