“A True Breath of Italy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2011

Il Vecchio opened recently in Pacific Grove, CA. This marvelous, truly authentic Italian restaurant has already attracted a large and loyal local clientele - deservedly so, since its cuisine, decor and service are outstanding. Owner Carl Alasko spent years in Rome, from which he has imported his concepts for Il Vecchio with telling success. The menu specializes in genuinely traditional Italian dishes, of a kind rarely offered in so-called "authentic" Italian eateries in this country. The decor is a unique offering of found objects, antique furniture, and creative inspiration - visit brooklyntowest.blogspot.com for more about how the place was designed. All this is complemented by an excellent, reasonably priced list of Italian and domestic wines. One caution: reservations are definitely in order. Monterey Peninsula locals love this restaurant, so it's difficult to get a table without them.

“Best authentic Italian food on the Monterey peninsula.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2011 via mobile

Il vecchio recently opened in pacific grove on the Monterey peninsula. The atmosphere is cozy yet not crowded feeling. I've been there twice since opening and have had the cannelloni both times. The lamb special was enjoyed by my husband. All of the desserts are house made. Had apple strudel yummy last visit and tiramisu the first time there. Prices are great - cannelloni at just $12.00. The dipping sauce for bread was good enough to drink. Looking forward to next trip there. Reservations definately needed. On Saturday night the line was literally outside on the street.

“Good food, service needs serious help”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2011

We were very excited to try this restaurant as a local write up promised authentic Italian food and surroundings. The decor was very nice and we liked being able to see into the open kitchen. The wine menu was excellent. We started with a salumi plate that was good, and tried the grilled lamb, chicken cacciatore, Italian sausages and rock cod. Portions were decent, not overly generous, and three of us were happy enough with our entrees - but the fish dish was cold by the time it came to the table. And the white beans were just a little too al dente and could have been cooked a little longer. The service, however, was really not good at all. We had a reservation but still had to wait in the crowded lobby area for our table for about 25 minutes. There were others also waiting (although a staff member distributed glasses of wine to quell the grumbling). The lady in charge of front of house was far from what you'd expect in an Italian trattoria - rather bossy and snooty - which was too bad. The wait staff didn't seem very comfortable with the menu but I'm sure that will improve over time as they settle in. I hope the front of house service improves too because I'd like to go back and try it again but could do without the attitude.

“Best restaurant in northern California”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2011

Absolutely fantastic and authentic Italian food. Excellent service-- extremely reasonable price for an outstanding dinner. No pretension here, just outstanding food from appetizers to dessert. This experience reminded us of dining in an Italian neighborhood restaurant where the owner actually cared about the customers on a personal level. Prices are unbelievably reasonable. Can't wait to return!

“Wonderful: really good food, service, low prices. What more could you ask for?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2011

Went just last night and I HIGHLY recommend Il Vecchio. Talked to the manager, who goes from table to table insuring that the food and service is up to par. And it sure as heck is! Couldn't believe the prices, i.e. LOW. Our daughter Tracy accompanied us to Il Vecchio; she's been there many times and loves it too. If you are in the Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove area, don't miss it!
