“Perfect spot for a romantic & celebratory get-away”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2013

It's been a while since I posted a review on TripAdvisor, but since we had such a magical stay at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Oxnard, I felt I needed to share this "secret" with travelers looking for a suite hotel in Southern California, directly on the ocean.

My husband and I both have birthdays the same week in December, so we planned a romantic escape away from the kids and stresses of life at the Embassy Suites in Oxnard. We had visited this beautiful hotel years ago when we were returning to our home in San Diego from a stay in Santa Barbara, and we vowed to return as guests some day. And we did!

Our room was huge and the bed oh so comfortable, as one reviewer mentioned. I love the fact we had a microwave and fridge in the room, always nice for snacks and chilling the wine for our birthday toast!

As I mentioned, the view outside our door was really mesmerizing.....the skies were so clear during our stay, we could see the Channel Islands (another spot we will visit soon).

The breakfast was top-notch....not your doughnut and weak coffee, but a full breakfast spread with all the trimmings, which included delicious cooked egg dishes.

The staff was very accommodating and friendly. The pool and spa looked inviting, but we had forgotten to bring our bathing suits, so we can't comment on that experience.

Photos speak a thousand words, as they say, and I hope my photos of the ocean directly at our door, and the hotel itself, will tell the story. They are attached.

BTW, thank you Tripadvisor, for being our go-to whenever we are planning a trip. I promise to be more active in writing reviews, in exchange for all the great advice your contributors have given to us when we do our travel research.

Room Tip: We had the ocean view room on the ground floor, with awesome views of the ocean and Channel Islands.

My wife and I have stayed at the hotel many times because of its location by the beach, the community and the always cordial and helpful staff. This last stay was for the Thanksgiving weekend and the scrumptious Thanksgiving Buffet the hotel offered for the occasion. On this trip we were pleasantly surprised by the new updated decor of the rooms, very warm and inviting. Kudo's to their decorator. If you are looking for a quiet out of the way place for a romantic weekend, or beach romping good time Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach - Hotel & Resort is the place to be.

On our annual extended family trip, decided to forgo Palm Springs or San Diego and reserved two Presidential Suites at the Mandalay Beach Embassy Suites located in Oxnard. The 2 bd 3 bath suites were spacious and gorgeous! With amazing views of the ocean and sunset. All three generations of our family enjoyed the resort so much we almost neglected the beach! Will definitely return.

Just returned from a wonderful stay at this hotel. The staff were very helpful and courteous at all times, especially the Valets. The suite was very clean and I was relieved to find the bed extremely comfortable (I have chronic back problems) The complimentary breakfast was excellent with a good selection, the food was fresh and constantly replenished right up to 9 am Meals in the Coastal Grill were delicious although the desserts were slightly overpriced. The resort landscaping is beautiful and the area around the pool thoroughly cleaned every morning. Access to the beach is easy and the scenery is breathtaking. It was off season and facilities around the pool were scaled back, nevertheless we had a memorable time.

Challenging to accurately review this hotel, because it really is in a marvelous location with beautiful views. But it is all let down because the custody of this location is in the hands of the relatively inept embassy suite chain. It could really be a spectacular resort, but embassy suites are seemingly satisfied with complacent service, below average food and a reluctance to excel.

We stayed with our 2 young children for a weekend in early December in a presidential suite ocean view. The room was renovated, and they had done fairly decent job - except that the lovely looking fireplace was just for looks and did not operate. And the kitchen had no utensils or flatware. I think forward looking, customer orientated hotel chain, recognizing the great beachfront location would make the mental step to have working fireplaces, figuring what a luxury item it would be on chilly winter evenings for its guests to sit by the fire. Not embassy suites, they just instal placebos.

If you like your breakfast canteen style, lukewarm and remensicent of school dinners, this is your place! Food throwing included! One of the clean up staff came across an open pot of yoghurt (stylishly served in its supermarket container) and disposed of it by attempted to throw it into a trash can 5 feet away. Rimshot! and the yoghurt went everywhere. And off he went on his other duties.

The architecture of the place is original and has the potential to impress. But rather than use it to impress, the hotel uses the cheapest and most utilitarian furniture. Just a shame that the potential of the place goes unrealized.

When we checked out (timely at 11 because the maid came to clean the room promptly at that time) there was no "how was your stay" or "I hope you'll come see us again." Just a "you'll need this pass to get out of the parking lot ($16 a night), be sure to drop it in the box as you leave."

And it is not as if this place is cheap. Our room rate was $520 a night (a gift from a grateful client) and to be honest I'd rather stay at the BH Peninsula, be treated graciously and save my memories of school dinners and lost opportunities for another time.

The rooms were well maintained. The view of the ocean was marvelous. I took advantage of the upgrade deal and arrived to discover I had a better room. Everyone at the Mandalay was extremely helpful. Even the maintenance staff offered to assist me.
