Orick is sometimes called the "Gateway to the Redwoods", since it's located just south of Redwood National Park. It's an unincorporated town of about 500, set in a pretty green valley.
The beach is just a few minutes away.
A lot of people just zip through this town but I usually stop and look through the several shops that sell woodcarvings. You can't miss them along Hwy 101 - there is a giant bear and horse, among other interesting displays. Redwood burls are a popular item.
I've seen elk around Orick fairly often, usually at the north edge of town along Redwood Creek.
There's only one motel and just a couple of places to eat here, and it's far from an upscale "yuppie" community, but folks are down-to-earth and always friendly to me.
