“Could this be Shangri La?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2014

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of spending a weekend at this resort and couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. The facilities are beautiful without being pretentious and the grounds are pristinely manicured with beautiful landscaping. The staff are genuinely friendly and service oriented. Our meals were delicious and we enjoyed dining al fresco. My wife enjoyed the spa and I enjoyed the golf course. Evenings are enchanting as you sit outside and feel the cool breezes. My only critique would be the quality of the cocktails, you may want to stick with drinks that come straight out of a bottle (wine, beer, liquors) as their mixed drinks are not up to par with the high quality of the restaurant.

As a caution, you need to check the weather forecast prior to planning your trip. While we enjoyed balmy weather in the low 80's, the staff cautioned us that it could have easily been in the low 100's.

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad room. All rooms seem to have a beautiful view either looking into...

We have been to Ojai Valley inn 2x and really have enjoyed it. We live in LA, so it's a 1 hr 15 min drive, with traffic can take up to 2.5 hrs+. The golf course is beautiful, almost every single hole has an amazing view. The food and service is good. Rent a bicycle and go ride the trails, very peaceful. It's a large property, but lovely to walk around. This is definitely a great place to stay which is why I rate it 5 stars, especially for LA residents wanting weekend getaway to relax. Only possible areas they could improve would be on crowded days to have more staff at the pools, took a while to get service. Also, on a Monday we asked for late checkout- they said no, that someone requested our room specifically…. Then, they told our friends the same thing about their room too. Bummer, we really wanted the late checkout to finish golf.

Thank you CarmelaL2 for your review and tips for the future traveller. Great to hear you were able to enjoy the golf course and all aspects of the property. We are sorry we were unable to provide you a late checkout during your stay, we always try whenever the business demands allow it!

Hopefully we will see you back up here for a quick golf getaway trip in the coming months, especially with the great Fall weather.

Thank you again,

The Ojai Valley Inn is beautiful but lately, it seems to be all about the money. In our last visit, they seem to nickel and dime their guests at every turn. However, this review is based off of adult-only stays at the Inn. There are many other amenities and Inn features geared towards families with small children that I didn't experience.

I have been to this hotel numerous times and kept coming back because the food is good, the grounds are gorgeous, rooms are clean, and I love the adult-only salt water pools. We went there this last time during my pregnancy and found a little cupcake that said congratulations in our room. There are nice hikes, the spa is gorgeous, there are a variety of fitness classes, and it is somehow both romantic and very kid-friendly.

However, during our last visit, it seemed like they were over-charging because they could- which to me seems the opposite of classy. At checkout, on top of our daily rate, there was a tourism tax, occupancy tax (both of which are common in CA) and a resort daily fee. When I asked about the resort fee- I was told it covered valet, wifi, and the pools. Resort fees are completely arbitrary- they could say it's for the plumbing. Overall, it was about $100 more a night than advertised. Not a huge deal but there were many issues with said amenities. The wifi was completely worthless and we ended up just turning it off and using LTE because the wifi never worked. The adult only (garden) pool closed at 2 on the days we were there for a private party (I thought guests paid for access to the pools) and the spa pools, which were supposed to be adult-only, were crowded and had children. Apparently, if you are willing to pay $150 for a cabana for the day, then kids can come. I also tried to take the 8 am spinning class. I waited for half an hour with 3 other people before it was clear the instructor wasn't coming. The front desk seemed to not care or be interested in finding the instructor. At the bar, the bartender teased me about not ordering a real drink (even though I was visibly pregnant) and then charged $7 for a ginger ale- which came from 3 different leftover Schwepps cans. Maybe it is normal to charge so much for non-alcoholic drinks (I wouldn't know since I usually drink alcohol when I'm not pregnant :)), but I found it off-putting. And of course, they don't have valet near the actual guest rooms. In general, it seemed like they were much less interested in providing good service as they were in making as much money as possible off of every guest.

We did still have a lovely time and had some great meals. We also did a nice couples massage. Although the massage itself wasn't amazing, the spa was fabulous. Each locker room has an outdoor clothing optional lounging area, a hot tub, sauna, steam room, etc. and the upstairs relaxation area has an indoor and outdoor lounging section with a fireplace. If I were to come back to Ojai again, I would stay at a local B&B and just book a treatment at the spa, which gives you access to their pools and spa for the day. And really the spa area is the best part of the Inn if you are there with adults.

Room Tip: Book somewhere else and go to the Inn for a spa treatment. Each spa treatment includes a day at the...

Thank you Jordan E for your review and loyalty for the property and congratulations on your pregnancy!

In regards to your concerns, our resort fee does encompass many of our on property activities and amenities without having to charge individually for them as many properties tend to do. We also reinvest the revenue from these fees back into the property to further enhance the products that it covers. For example, we just completed a full property-wide wireless internet enhancement project that also added more coverage throughout our pool areas and all public spaces of the property.

We appreciate your business and we do research the current luxury market trends regularly, to assist us with accurate and fair pricing guidelines.

We will be addressing your service concerns from the Café Verde restaurant and the other noted service challenges you encountered with the respective managers to prevent re-occurrence.

Please feel free to contact me directly should you wish to discuss further.

Cheers,
Shaun O'Bryan

The resort is located on a beautiful property within minutes of Ojai. The property is delightful and our room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The golf course looked great but we chose to explore Ojai and other nearby locations. The dining options were many and all were very good. This is a wonderful place to visit.

After 2 weeks of camping and cruising Southern CA, spending our last weekend in Ojai capped off a memorable vacation. The facility, staff, amenities, and environment were all nothing less than wonderful! This being our first experience at Ojai Valley Inn, we are glad to endorse the fact that they are all that they say they are and more. We certainly will tell friends, and most definitely visit again. Thank you all for a wonderful experience!!

how do i describe a place that gets it so right in everything they do ,AND are equally low key and un pretentious ?The Inn is simply one of the finest places I have ever stayed anywhere in the world.
The grounds are meticulous, the smell of lavender and eucalyptus fill the air, nature is very big here.
The rooms are big, simply beautiful in a very natural ,elegant way, some with stone fireplaces, some are suites, many face the mountains so you can see the "pink" moment when the day turns to night.
Allover the property are hidden gorgeous little spaces , like terraces with fire pits, billowy tents in a field of lavender with strung tea lights to light your way..and steps leading to different plateaus of the spanish style hacienda buildings. brunch is fun, shmoozy and a social kind of sceney place, but delicious. inside or out,it's all good. only sort of not so good -is the outdoor restaurant at night for dinner, way over price food and kind of not as good as you want for the super high price.eat in town- not much better , but who cares.
the spa is famous, it's mediterranean style, busy, crowded but super posh and it's still great even when it's packed. go anyway. go to the spa pool to avoid the family pool. i could just go on,i hope they read this so i get a free upgrade, but i don't care,i;m join back no matter what.

Room Tip: go to the farmers market sunday morning, eat breakfast at the hotel first, then hit the market

We booked "The Best of Ojai" package with them and had a terrific time.
Included were a nice veranda room with breakfast and choice of golf or spa treatment each day.
The setting and the staff are world class California. Food not as delicious as it could be but the settings are beautiful. Therapists knew what they were doing and we had xlnt 'deep tissue' treatments. Golf course is immaculate and fun to play.

Room Tip: High floor terrace golf course view. Have your room service dinner set-up on the terrace one evenin...
