“A Room of One's Own”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

I came to the Ojai Retreat for two night and stayed in the Garden Room, which was just perfect.
My husband had reserved the room for me as a birthday present so I could get away to do some writing--away from the kids and the barking dogs, etc. Turned out to be a GREAT place to work and to concentrate. At times I felt like I should NOT be working and just meditating or napping, but to me, having a "Room of One's Own"--space and time is all the peace I need.

The Garden Room is just lovely, too. As I sat working at the corner table, I had a lovely view of the valley, and I was amazed at the number and species of birds that I saw in the oak tree just outside the window--woodpeckers, blue jays, towhees, crows, and many other interesting species that I've never seen before!

Finally, the breakfasts are just wonderful. A lovely woman (sorry, I've forgotton her name!) prepares a delicious breakfast with eggs and veggie sausage and fruit salad, lots of breads and condiments, teas, juices, and the BEST homemade granola. I ate my breakfast out in the patio watched a couple of black phoebes take a bath in some water that had pooled in a pot.

Overall, it was a wonderful stay. No complaints whatsoever.

Always wonderful to unwind and have fun at the Beautiful Ojai Retreat. The perfect get-away. We used to stay in the center of town, which has its own rewards, but the Retreat sits atop a high hill with stellar views in all directions, and is much more peaceful. Plus the rooms are perfect -- great, simple decor, comfortable beds and refrigerator and microwave.
We much enjoy the tasty breakfasts and usually linger talking with other guests, Ulrich (Executive Director) and other Staff. This is a wonderfully diverse group, and always friendly and stimulating.
Then we wander off to hike, shop, and just enjoy, and then so enjoy returning to a beautifully decorated room -- also with great views and often with private patios. I'm "homesick" for this wonderful place as I write! Ivan

My husband has cancer and during our visit he was half way through his chemo and radiation treatment. It was a great place for him to relax, nap, and feel tranquil. The breakfast was wonderful...there was food he could eat and the camaraderie helped his appetite.

The office staff was wonderful and accommodating. There were responsive to our needs. Our children came to stay too to be with their dad from on their break from college, and the just loved the view in the Ojai Retreat Room, the comfortable beds, and the food.

We recommend it to anyone who wants to truly have a retreat from the rush of the world. No phones in rooms, no TV's...just what the doctor ordered.

Room Tip: Actually there is not swimming pool, but there are Yoga classes, and a relaxation garden with a foun...

I recently spent a night at The Ojai Retreat and found it to be very relaxing. The grounds are beautiful and serene and sit on top of a hill. If you opt to have breakfast in the main room, you can't help but to notice the amazing views in every direction. Walking around the property, you'll also notice the great views, not to mention the wildlife. We encountered a coyote, squirrels, rabbits, small lizards and plenty of birds.

I particularly loved that there were no televisions or phones in the rooms. It personally allowed me to slow down a bit and really enjoy the quiet. Don't forget to bring a good book/magazine!

The staff was also very welcoming and kind, which is always a plus.

Anyone who wants a quiet, comfortable, panoramic view will be excited to find The Ojai Retreat. There is wholesomeness about everything that you see and feel. The quiet atmosphere permits uninterrupted thought. The comfort allows for a relaxed time with no additional needs. The panoramic view gives a person space to reflect, consider, reconsider, and make thoughtful decisions in whatever subject enters their mind. It is a place you will miss moments after leaving. However, there are so many dimensions, i.e., landscape, meals, activities within the retreat propery, and activites in the surrounding area that you will want to return as soon as you can find the time.

Room Tip: Decide what view you want to see and pick the room that has that view. There are larger and smaller...

Probably one of the best characteristics of this place is the beautiful location on a five-acre country hilltop in the middle of the Ojai Valley. It is best to ask for a room with a view although only a few rooms/cabins actually have much of a view. We stayed in the "Balcony" and it was both very private and had nice valley and mountain views. Breakfasts in the main house are ample with lots of organic items such as homemade granola, corn flakes, yogurt, coffee and fresh fruit. There are bagels and breads and juices. If you are interested in the sites and things to do, ask for Claire in the office who was particularly helpful! It also appears that the management has actually implemented a number of sustainable practices, which is very positive!

Room Tip: We liked the "Balcony" because of its private location and view, but there are other view...

We have been going to The Ojai Retreat for the past eight years, usually in May and in November. It is a beautiful, comfortable, relaxing experience with rooms decorated tastefully, a wonderful great room with views of the breathtaking countryside, and a bountiful healthy breakfast. With no television and no telephone, it is truly a "retreat." The surrounding Ojai valley is one of the most beautiful places in the world. If you want a peaceful getaway, we highly recommend the excellent Ojai Retreat.

Room Tip: Rooms on the north side have a view of the beautiful mountains.
