“four stars. if someone is in the room above you, no stars.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

our first visit to this motel was fine until after 11 pm. we had a groupon that gave us a price of about $100. the exterior view of the motel was a bit concerning, but the reception area and the very pleasant desiree made us feel welcome.

the room had a basic bathroom, but a full range of toiletry products were provided. hair dryers have to be requested from reception. a built in ironing board was cleverly hidden behind a tall mirror. the hipster inspired furniture and other decor was fine, as was large flat screen tv (see photos). the reception had a couple of hundred dvds to use. free wi-fi.

as we entered the room we immediately noticed the wood floors were very noisy. as noisy as the cheers episode where cliff has the squeaky shoes. it wasn't a big concern until we were awakened after 11 pm at night when a couple with children arrived upstairs. every footfall seemed as loud as a jackhammer. we had to call them to ask for a little care given the nature of the flooring, but we were up until after 1 am and then awakened again at 6 am. please understand the problem was not the family. any person upstairs would have been loud enough to wake any person downstairs. it is that LOUD!

the lobby opens at 730 for a limited but appreciated continental breakfast. the in room coffee was only instant. i asked desiree (back on duty) if other downstairs rooms were available when the family checked in. she said yes. she said she was aware of complaints of noisy floors. i said no one should get an upstairs room if someone was occupying a downstairs room. no compensation was offered.

on return to the room we noticed many marks (see photo) on the ceiling which we interpreted as prior guests attempts to communicate with their upstairs neighbors relating to excessive noise. of particular interest were two marks which looked like sizable dents from the top of opened wine bottles. it is worth noting the motel does provide a complimentary bottle of wine.

the downstairs rooms have the advantage of a private patio which can access the large garden area and the pool. the upstairs has a small balcony.

we would stay there again if 1) we were upstairs (but we would be very concerned about our noise for those below! or 2) if promised no one would be allowed to stay in the room above us.

one last point: the complaints of the motel/rooms being dirty was not apparent in any way to us.

Room Tip: stay upstairs only or stay somewhere else.

Wow! This place is right outn of the 60's.....sinatra style...the lobby looks really cool...and the front desk staff christopher was very helpful. The rooms are small but clean and cool. Great patio and the pool area is really nice. Walking distance to downtown shops, stores and restaurants. Affordable and simple, just the way i like it. Had a great getaway to ojai.
Agave Maria nearby serves great mexican food.It is quiet and relaxing. This place is a deal! I will be back .

Room Tip: 105 is cool.

Wow, I haven't written a review for a while, but this place is horrible. I can see that there was a great plan/vision and I wanted to like it, but it apprears that management is by someone who is afraid to actually work and keep a place running. There is no attention to cleaniness, maintenance or customer service. And let me say I love small hotels...I don't expect everyplace to be the Hilton, I just need a clean and well maintained room.

OK, here are the specific problems I had. I was in room 212.

1) My room was dirty. There were hairs in the tub and the toilet. The tub edges were moldy.
2) The jacuzzi had a County Env. Health, closure sign. I looked it up and it was due to bacteria count! GROSS! And, that was from 4 months prior. What hotel owner would leave a problem like that unattended to?
3) My room had a baggy hanging from the ceiling where a canned light should have been. In fact, the entire room seemed to be remodeled by a stoned contractor who doesn't have any class (or skill).
4) They had painted the bathroom twice, neither time had they bothered to take the tank off the toilet...and when they took a wall mounted hair dryer off the wall, they didn't bother to repaint there either. It just isn't relaxing and worth $170 a night to stay in a place that is tacky.
5) The back of the door in the bathroom was chipping and falling apart.
6) There was food on the ceiling in two different places.

Save your money for a different place, the beds wheren't even comfortable!

On the plus side: reasonable price, free breakfast, pool, free bikes, decor in rooms and lobby bright and cheerful with resident cat.
On the minus side: We had room 112 which was very stuffy. The air conditioner was noisy and didn't work well. Opened the window but then got the traffice noise from the main street.
Limited staffing, the front desk is closed during the night until 7:30 am. Showered at 6:00 am only to discover there was no hair dryer in the room. We had business to attend early, so never got a chance to have the 8:30 am breakfast.
Housekeeping was terrible. No replenish of towels, toiletries, coffee, cups, ice bucket not emptied, no plastic bags for ice buckets. Needless to say, we did not leave a tip the second day.
This is basically a remodelled old motel. OK for the price. Just don't expect much.

We stayed at The Capri in Ojai for a family wedding event in late October. We got a special "wedding" rate, so for what we got it was certainly worth it. I would however, not want to pay much more than that, and am not sure what the regular rate is. It is a cute retro motel and very centrally located in town.
On the plus side: The rooms were quite spacious, and the bed and pillows extremely comfortable. It was fairly clean and we did not really have a problem with noise from people or cars (as it is a motel like setting). It is close to the town, shops and stores and Ojai is a lovely place with all sorts of unique and interesting events and things going on. The "continental" breakfast was great, fresh waffles that you make yourself, lots of different types of cereal, breads, bagels, and all the condiments that go with it, as well as different types of milk (almond) and juices and very good fresh coffee. Very small, quaint, but adequate seating area, with fireplace and computer for use by reception desk. The personnel are very informative, artistic and creative and once you are able to engage them in good conversation, they are then quite friendly.

On the slightly negative side, - internet connection was very difficult and almost non-existent in the rooms, and one has to be in the office/food area to access. We also had to ask for some of the basic commodities e.g. iron & board, blow dryer (as none provided in the rooms). Very little hangars and closet space. The pool and cabana area (loungers etc.) have seen better days, and needs a bit of updated. We did not have a screen on our main floor patio doors, (some rooms did) but left it open all night, and did not have a problem with bugs or noise. One suggestion I would make is that they try to incorporate some more fruit. They had an abundance of apples, but Ojai has many orange vineyards, and it would have been nice to have oranges, as well as apples available.

All in all we had a very pleasant experience (there were 8 of us in 4 rooms, at one time) and had good time together.

So much fun! A step back in time, but newly and tastefully done. We expected Frank Sinatra to walk around the corner. Really a fun and very comfortable place to stay. Love the pool And cabanas, stay here you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: 105 was great! You walked out of your, fenced in area to the pool! Great!

The attention to details at this Hotel make all the difference. The restoration of this 1960's hotel is beautiful. The colored lights outside, the soft colors on the interior walls, the sleek look of the furniture make this hotel very visually appealing. The continential breakfast was better than I expected, with make your own waffles and interesting teas. My Husband and I brought our dog since the hotel is pet friendly. This was the first time we traveled with our dog. The room was great for the 3 of us since it had a large fenced in patio. With all the pluses the only reason I did not give the hotel 5 stars is the noise from the room next door. We could hear them clearly, and they were not talking loudly.
Ojai is a great get away from LA, I would definately come back to this hotel.
