My girlfriend and I were lookng for a nice but inexpensive hotel for a one-day getaway from L.A. We decided to go to Ojai because of the short drive from the city and small town vibe. After researching a number of optons, I decided to book the Rancho Inn...though I was a bit concerned about some of the bad reviews I'd seen, I noticed they were mostly old, and I liked the price and the pictures I'd seen on line, so I took a leap of faith & made the reservation. Well, my hunch turned out to be correct! We had an outstanding time and the main reason was because of the hotel. When we got there we were greeted at the front desk by a very pleasant and attractive Asian woman (whose name escapes me now) who told us that her and her husband had just taken over the lease there. She offered us the option of staying in a room towards the back or a jacuzzi suite near the front, which we took. The room itself was perfect for what we wanted...it had a rustic feel in an old west kind of way but was very clean. There was a huge King size bed with plenty of pillows that just screamed comfort. The Jacuzzi tub dominated one side of the room and there was a beautiful flat screen TV (they have DirecTV) on the dresser. We cleaned up & walked around the grounds, which were well maintained with rose bushes and comfortable sitting areas. One concern was when we went out to the pool area we saw a sign on the gate from the public health department, but when we went inside the pool looked clean and ready to use. The manager told us that the warning had to do with some of the concrete surrounding the pool and not the pool itself, which was maintained regularly. There was also a sauna room, which was in excellent shape. We used the bike path that ran behind the inn to walk into town, which took about 10 minutes, had a fantastic lunch, and did some browsing at some of the local art shops. After wards,we retired to the hotel, where I took a sauna, then joined my girlfriend for a bottle of wine in the jacuzzi. We spent the rest of the night relaxing in bed and watching TV. The whole scenario was exactly what we were looking for...a nice, quiet spot to relax and enjoy each other's company. Also, the manager was very nice and accomodating to any of our requests in a timely manner. There were a couple of minor issues; the refrigerator in the room we had did not work, but we did not bother to metion this to management as it wasn't a crucial point. Also, if you use the jacuzzi, be sure to fill the tub all the way to the top, because the jets are quite powerful and will spray water around the room if there isn't enough water to cover them. All in all though, I have to rank the Rancho Inn as one of my favorite hotel stays ever (especially given the reasonable price) and my girlfriend and I are looking forward to returning and staying longer next time.
