Okay, we're strictly tourists and not wine connoisseurs at all, and I've got to say I was concerned when I learned my wife had booked a tasting at a winery (Cardinale) thruough the concierge at our hotel for $50 per person (including only cheese and crackers, not a meal). But it turned out to be a terrific experience. What we got, basically, was 1.5 to 2 hours sitting in the winery's panoramic tasting room, and sipping expensive wines with Brendan Scholl, the Estate Manager at Cardinale, and a Master Sommellier. It was just a flat out delightful experience. We learned a lot about wine, the Napa valley, and talked about all kinds of things. Never felt any pressure to buy their high-end wines, though of course, we did buy a few bottles (Brendan graciously credited the tasting fee against our purchase). We had the wine shipped and it arrived right after we got home. Obviously, $50 per person wine tastings are not for everyone, but for us, the experience was a highlight of our trip (right up there with dinners at Bouchon and Bottega), that we would not have missed.
