Owner description: Cultivated with passion and a singular vision, Opus One produces one ultra-premium Bordeaux blend a year. A collaboration between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Opus One arose out of passion. And beginning with the first harvest in 1979, every vintage of Opus One has expressed the vision and passionate spirit of its founders. Our goal is to create a wine of ultimate quality that reflects the traditions and innovations of both founders. Visiting the winery is by appointment only.

“It is the height of serenity”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

Opus One is well known for its fabulous wine, but a visit to the winery for sampling is a large step above most winery tours. The winery offers tours of the facility that clearly demonstrates their devotion to their wine and how they care for each vintage. I'm not sure the actual tour is necessary to experience the serenity of being there. My daughter and myself shared 2 2 vintages (2007 & 2010) while being enveloped in the absolute calm, picturesque and a real serenity that permeates the winery location. The 2 vintages cost $90 and are well worth the price for a taste of true wine excellence and elegance.

“Biggest disappointment in Napa Valley”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2013

Most of the winery's that we visited welcomed us and our business. Opus One staff seem only interested in takin our $50 for a lousy small glass of wine. There was nothing special about the wine. We couldn't get out of there fast enough!

“Such high hopes, such a terrible tour!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2013

Opus One-the mere name commands respect among devotees of California wine. The vineyard that you see on wine lists, and say "boy, I wish I could afford to try this". That's why we came here.

The tour/tasting was $65 per, and let's face it....you are really paying for the glass of wine at the end.

Everything about the tour reeks pretentiousness. I don't want to take anything away from the building, which is beautiful, and as they explain a blending of French and American styles, paralleling the wine. The furnishings, etc. all fit the image.

The tour starts with an introduction in an ornate "living room" type setting which is not at all suited to speaking to a group of people. In order to accommodate everyone, it is necessary to sit facing in different directions....you get the picture, and it made a situation in which it was hard to hear even worse.

At this point, some comments about the tour guide are relevant. She 1). Did not speak loudly enough for everyone to hear, despite rooms with terrible acoustics and or background noise, and never checked in with the group about whether she could be heard. 2). Didn't
do something as simple as closing a door to eliminate background noise when she could have, making herself even more inaudible 3). Just seemed to miss the mark when answering a number of questions. For
example, an older visitor was commenting on the amount of automation that was used, and
the lack of the human element in contemporary winemaking.
She disagreed with him and defended the current processes, but only at the end she mentioned that one process when automated replaced 8 to 10 people. By showing some
interest and acknowledgment of
the intent of the questions even if you disagreed it would've been very helpful. Lastly, we got
to the tasting room and the bottle of Opus One and filled glasses were placed like a
shrine, as one would place holy water upon the altar (see the photo). We were
left to taste the wine and she did
not attempt to keep the group together, or give us adequate instructions about where we were going next. Several of us
left the room when done, not knowing where we were going and ended up in an elevator which took us up and let us off behind a rope barricade.

This just proved me once again that reputation and status do not necessarily make for a
Great experience when visiting.

I would not come back. Despite the ability to taste this wine, there are many other smaller producers of great wine which are not nearly as expensive, and are much more friendly and accommodating.

“Amazing property with delicious wine!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013 credit card Amex Card Member Review

As a person who enjoys red wine, Opus One Winery is a must-see while in Napa. Do yourself a favor and book the tour that is a little more expensive than the base tour, you will be in for a super-intimate tour and a chance to have multiple tastings. I would recommend shopping around for prices when buying a bottle, I found the vintage we bought for $40 cheaper at a local liquor store.

“beautiful, worth it, but felt very formal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013 credit card Amex Card Member Review

where else can you get just a glass of Opus? just here, I think. Tasting scrumptuous, view unbelievable. Really worth it. The staff was welcoming, but very formal approaching arrogant. If I were younger I might have been intimidated. The building, surrounding grounds and views, with the ability to just sit upstairs and soak it all in made it well worth the $40 for the taste.
