“Lovely rooms, incredible service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

My husband, daughter, and I took a trip from L.A. on the Starlight Amtrack train to Oakland and stayed in this gem of a hotel prior to boarding our cruise ship in San Francisco and after disembarking the ship. We loved our stay both times. We had booked a suite and were upgraded to an ocean view the first visit and were lucky enough to have the handicapped suite on our return. Both rooms were more than spacious - they were HUGE. Both rooms had fire places and very comfortable beds. More than that, the room service from the restaurant downstairs was amazing. They even sent up a note with our dinner thanking us for dining with them AND gave us complimentary organic ice cream! I can't wait to go back and enjoy some more time there. I'd HIGHLY recommend this place. Plus, we had our pack and play for our little girl and the room was big enough to have her sleep at one end and we could have lights on and type or read in comfort in the other end of the suite. WONDERFUL!

Room Tip: If you choose a suite on the water, you avoid much of the train sounds that occur throughout the nig...

I spent a night here while in Oakland for a friend's wedding. The location is great from SF and I would encourage everyone to take the ferry there. The hotel is on the water, which is it's best attribute. The staff at the front desk were extremely pleasant and helpful, contrary to some reviews and the rooms are huge...great for a family. The pool is excellent and the kids spent much of the time swimming.

The downside is that the hotel is run-down. The interior looks like Vegas in the 70's and the rooms are in desperate need of a remodel. The beds were comfortable, but that's not enough to shield the noise from neighboring rooms. The worst thing was having our keycard stop working and when we obtained new cards, they still didn't work. The excuses didn't make sense (did you demagnetize the card?) and there was no attempt to follow up on getting us into the room.

So with some attention to management and investment in restoring the rooms, it could be a great compliment to Jack London Square rejuvenation. We all know that area could use it.

Room Tip: Get a water view room.

huge room, no mini fridge, comfortable bathroom. Kind of noisy in the hall - we were across the hall from a huge party room.

The biggest thing to note is that the front desk staff, upon checking in, was incredibly snotty and extremely rude to our friends. The front desk staff, upon checking out, recommended that we eat anywhere but Miss Pearl's, the hotel's restaurant. Not a good sign!

Room Tip: get a room overlooking the square!

The location is great for bay view, the ferry across to S.F.,and other transportation, but you have to put up with a somewhat raunchy neighborhood at night, where it is unsafe to walk around. By day, it offers history and education. This is Oakland, folks.
The parking is inconvenient and an extra $20 on the property outdoors with valet.
The room has a loud AC which we used as white noise because of poor noise insulation between rooms [we could hear neighbor sneeze]; a low toilet [from a kindergarten?]; slow elevator; nice decor.
Breakfast is extra and pricey on the premises with a beautiful and romantic view.
THE BEDS: excellent mattress; lovely sheets & duvet -- BUT soiled duvet covers were found---ick! not fresh as promised. I told the desk clerk in writing, but nothing was done about it. The right hand doesn't know what the left is doing.

We wanted a layover hotel. We were in route from LA to San Francisco and what to use public transportation for everything. We used the Amtrak and the Bart to get around. It seems like an average hotel but is within walking distance from Amtrak, and a quick free bus ride to the Bart station. We upgraded to a Marina view suite. It had a wonderful view of the harbor and Jack London square. Nothing special about the place other than location but worth the money and a great choice considering the limited option in the area. We arrived late in the evening and felt safe. Could have been rated higher if a little continental breakfast included.

After driving down from the Redwoods back to the bay area, we were so pleasantly surprised by this lovely hotel. Do not be daunted by the looks of the area when driving in - the Jack London Square area is very nice. We had a room on the water side and the view was fantastic! We could watch the giant ships come in and the ferry landing is adjacent to the hotel. There is also a very nice pool. The room was fine and our guests were delighted to drink Anderson Valley wine on the balcony and watch the sun set on the working side of the bay. The old Alameda base is directly across the narrow bay and there is a parade of boats and paddle boarders passing by. The front desk people were helpful and friendly. The only minor glitch was that they promote a free vodka tasting in the restaurant which, when you get there, is an obvious annoyance to everyone working in the restaurant. The waitress' snarky comments were a reason to patronize other restaurants over the weekend, but this was a minor point. Shopping, music, and the USS Potomac in the immediate area. Definitely would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a waterside room - the views are fantastic.

The rooms are spacious and the staff is friendly. One can tell they have tried to upgrade an older building, however, the age of the building does stand out (loud floors, older paint/elevators etc) and furniture in the suites is poorly arranged (ex: we had an L-shaped sofa, a chair, a dining table, a desk, a couple night stands and and a king bed in our room and it appeared to be shoved in corners). What's more, the extra furniture seems ill-suited to the room (ex: why a huge dining table for 6 and L-sofa in a room for 2?) We appreciated the 3 minute walking distance this hotel offers to those riding the train or ferry. We were facing the train station and did not hear the trains too much. They accommodated our late night check in well, and the bed was comfortable. We had room service breakfast in the morning and the sour dough bread was very good, however, the eggs were extremely runny, 1 was only given 1 slice of toast with my $12 two egg breakfast and there were not many other breakfast options with meat. Our biggest disappointment was the dial up speed internet. My mac never did connect and we gave up. My ipad did connect but they wanted an upgrade fee to get "faster" service. Very underhanded if you ask me.

Room Tip: If you like lots of room ask for a suite on the 5th floor. This hotel is a good option if you are e...
