I was arriving in Oakland by train fairly late at night and wanted somewhere to stay within walking distance of the Jack London Square Amtrak station. The Best Western Inn at the Square is indeed within walking distance of the station -- about a 5-10 minute jaunt through well-lit streets. The Jack London Inn and Waterfront Hotel are also close.
I was a little disconcerted as I walked up the street (Broadway) toward the hotel and saw the Best Western's two neighbors. First I passed a large, rowdy group outside a run-down looking place called the Oakland Metro, apparently a popular nightclub in the area. Next to that was an adult bookstore/movie shop offering 24 hour access for one low price, then the Buttercup Restaurant and the Best Western. I guess you could claim it is ideally located if you're looking to go clubbing and end the night with some adult entertainment. Unfortunately, I wasn't interested in either.
The guy at the front desk was polite enough, but seemed a little sketchy. He had slow jams playing pretty loud on the sound system in the front desk area... setting the mood, I guess. Got my room assigned, two double beds on the first floor, rather than the higher floor I'd requested.
I opened the door and was hit with a musty scent, and a view of the dated-looking furniture, bedspreads and wall art. Though there was a new-looking TV with cable and HBO. There was also free WiFi. The only window faced the courtyard and pool, so I had to keep the curtains closed. The window-mounted air conditioner helped with the musty smell.
It had instructions for locking the deadbolt on the front door, but the bolt wouldn't deploy. Luckily there was also a chain. The bathroom was fine -- everything worked as intended. The walls were VERY thin... I could clearly hear the conversations and toilet flushing in the adjoining room. Though everything looked clean enough, something about the place made me hesitant to walk around in bare feet. They deliver a newspaper in the morning, which is nice.
The location is a quick walk to Jack London Square, which has a nice Barnes and Noble and a number of nice restaurants. It's also about a 15 minute walk to the nearest BART station, which is convenient. You do hear some train horns at night because of the proximity to the tracks.
My AAA guide (a year old) lists this as 3 diamonds, but it definitely seemed less than that -- not nearly as nice as other 3 diamond Best Westerns I've stayed at. When I returned, I checked the AAA Web site, and sure enough, it's now listed as a 2 diamond.
It seemed like some of the rooms facing the exterior rather than the courtyard may have been a bit nicer. It was fine for one night, but reminded me more of a Motel 6 than a Best Western... though for the $79/night I paid, I guess I got what I paid for. I'd have been very disappointed with the room if I'd paid any more.
