I live in this neighborhood and remember when a charming little bakeshop opened on the corner a few years ago. Yeah, it was kind of fun and silly to see the proprietor wearing a neon-blue wig, and people eating their goodies outside off of ironing boards. It'd been a while since then, and we knew that basically, Betty's had evolved into a one-product shop: Fried chicken sandwiches. It was REALLY hard to imagine that anything on EARTH was worth the waiting for, as people lined up daily. When we finally had the opportunity (and the was no line!) to try for ourselves, we were BEYOND disappointed. First off, over $20 for two sandwiches. Okay, maybe if it was local, organic, etc., (all the stuff we love that makes the proteins taste good and good for us), we might justify the price, OR, if the thing just TASTED good. But, seriously, my first thought was, "this tastes just like Swanson's TV Dinners' fried chicken from when I was a kid"...only not that good. Adding insult to injury of the dry and off-tasting chicken (I've gotten better in bulk from Costco), and the nondescript pillowy whitebread roll, was a very vinegary coleslaw with an inedible abundance (we like our heat, but make it balanced!) of jalapeno peppers. Ugh. What a disgrace. Betty, better loosen your wig, and stop trying to fool otherwise food-savvy Oaklanders with substandard fare. Eaters, do yourself a favor, and go to Brown Sugar Kitchen in West Oakland, and taste some REAL fried chicken, made with care and taste!!!
