“Excellent value after recent renovation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2011

Bay Breeze is a is like a pearl in an oyster - clammy surroundings but a pleasant interior. You get everything you'd expect at a well kept Motel 6 or Budget Inn but at $40 a night easily a third off any of it's competitors in greater Oakland. While the location is easy off/on the I880 using either the 66th St or High St exits, there's really nothing in walking distance except perhaps the Coliseum (and even that walk is only advisable in day light). But with a car the charming island community of Alameda is a mere 5 minutes away and it has eateries of all description.

The immediate vicinity is mostly industrial; but, the motel property is completely enclosed with video surveillance - I observed nothing alarming in the parking lot during my 5 night stay and had no qualms about my relatively new car. The rooms are all being totally redone. Mine had a newly refitted bath that was spotlessly clean - a marble sink (outside the bathroom) and large marble-like ceramic tile flooring. The walls were a cheerful yellow and the carpeting was in fair condition. The mattress was about par for economy lodging (and I prefer firm bedding anyways). The sheets and towels were replaced every morning. All the appliances worked - TV (with cable & HBO); microwave; and mini-fridge. With cellphones so common now (and most can serve as an alarm clock) - I find a lot of budget places like Bay Breeze forgoing phones, clocks, alarms, etc in their rooms. More importantly the Wifi internet access is free with a good steady signal strength (using it to type this review).

All said, if you're in Oakland and aren't looking for scenic views or nearby amenities/attractions but just want a decent place to lay your head down and a clean shower - then Bay Breeze offers the best bang for your buck (and if you're attending an event at the Coliseum it's a no brainer).

I stayed there with my spouse for two nights. The staff was friendly. However, the motel's location is very remote and the neighborhood is absolutely awful, right by no where. It shows right by the highway on the map, but you have to drive through some weird small road to find the gate. Surround that area you can't find any food in any walkable distance.

The room has been obviously renovated and cleaned, with a large TV, 2 soaps, 4 different-sized towels, a microwave and a small frige. But the room smells awful, all old stinky smoke. We have to wash all the clothes, jackets, even the laptop sleeve afterwards because they stink after our stay for a night.

When we checked in, my spouse found that there's an obvious foot print on our door showing it has been kicked in. As all other previous reviews, there's no clock and no phone in the room. We could hear people shouting, dogs barking outside the door. We felt scary and worried all night long. Plus, there are ants in the room. The bed sheets have been cleaned but the mattress was old and disgusting. I got several bug bites in the first hour when we got into the room, and they haven't disappeared yet 3 days after our trip AND STILL HURT. We regret not having done more research and will definitely NOT RECOMMEND any friend to come. Not safe.

The room I'm staying in is super clean. It has new carpets, new paint, VERY nice and clean bathroom, small microwave, small refrigerator. Channels 2-37 on TV, with all the cable news channels, HBO, etc. Since my room was just refinished, it had no alarm clock but since I brought my own, I didn't need them to supply me one. New digitally-controlled air unit next to the window --- it does a good job to keep the room warm during cold evenings. The motel is surrounded by a gated fence with full video surveillence, so never once did I fear for my safety. It's the best deal in town and would be a mistake (IMHO) to pass it over. Free WIFI internet with 250 Kb/sec download rate (equivalent to 2.1 Mbps DSL). Very close to Lucky's supermarket, and easy access to I-880. Caveat: Freeway off-ramp work in progress, but that shouldn't be a hindrance if you want5 to save a minimum of $25/night ffor a nice room.

Room Tip: Tell desk manager if u plan to stay for long time

The people in the front desk were helpful, not rude at all. I asked for a place nearby to eat and they gave me directions to the nearest mickey d's. The room was okay, the door looked like it had been kicked in, there was burn marks on the bed and curtains, the carpet was dirty, there was a metal mesh screen that had a disgusting looking stain on it. The bathroom was clean and we had 2 dish towels and 2 full size towels. TV was very small but still watchable. I slept fully clothed with a jacket, gloves and shoes. The area was grimy but it was close to fast food places, a gas station and the Oracle. It was pretty cold but that's because it's so close to the ocean. Best part about this place is the price and the distance from the Oracle. I would only recommend the Bay Breeze Inn if you have to stay in a hotel in Oakland and need to save money.

i stayed in room 146 this time, and for $40 bucks a night- it was more than good enough.
i do long drives as part of my business and it has been very helpful to find small hotels like this could be at par with higher rated ones but actually just lack free breakfast or better yet
saves you a ton of dough helping you sleep better.
However i would recommend some of the staff to try and be more accomodating.

Honestly, Horrible! Room stinks, Staff was rude, people loitering around room doors, people sitting on your car like it's theirs, towel was dried to a crisp, and there was only 1 towel, no wash cloth, soap was opened, remote was not in room...!!!! All in one night!! When I ask for a wash cloth, another towel for my wife, and a remote, the lady asks me for cash to rent the remote, and said there is towels in the room. She actually argued with me about the towels! I refuse to stay here. The entire place needs to be condemned. The smell is like a very old home. I advise you to stay elsewhere. Cheap, yes. And with cheap, comes terrible service and a poor place to lay your head. The pillows are so flat, most likely at least 5 years old. The only nice thing was the low price, but you learn quickly why it's so low.

When we got there, I felt I stood in the middle of junkyard. The building is old and the room is very small. Everything is cheap except the price. I didn’t feel any bay breeze and smelled horrible. Also, this location is so noisy and unsafe.
