“Do not make the same huge mistake that we did!!! Don't ever think to book here, you'll regret!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012 via mobile

I hope you are reading these reviews before booking your room and not after as I did :(.
This place is far the worst experience that I've ever had in my whole life. Filthy, crippy, unveilevable horrible customer service of a Chinese dirty guy who treat you like a dumb. After making a same day reservation for a "non-smoking" double queen room, I called them to make sure They had a non smoking room available for me, lying they said they did. I called them again to let them know I was arriving at 1am, and checked again for the status of the room, and they said it was everything ok :(
When I got there, this unpleasant Chinese guy said they were sold out on queens. What? I called you twice during the day and you confirmed that you were keeping my room? Instead, he gave me 2 kings Smoking rooms...We went up to check the rooms and they were exactly as they've been described by the others reviewers. Think of everything you are not expecting for a motel room and you will find it. Terrible, stinky, terrifying, dirty, filthy, Old, unpleasant, all in one!!!
But the worst was coming. I went back to the front desk to return the keys because I was not going to sleep there. Neither priceline or the filthy chinese guy made responsible of what was going on. After three days of asking for my money back, they won't refund it because they gave me a "solution" offering 2 rooms instead of one. No matter that I didn't use them. I'm sad for me but I'll make so many people happy making avoiding this place for your trip. Believe me, you'll be extremely dissapointed with yourself For not spending $50 or $70 more for a decent place

“only if you have to”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

I stayed here with my family, well, because we didn't know any better.
I think the first red flag was when I saw the reception was behind a bullet proof glass.

We ordered a non smoking room through travelocity, (which later we discovered took a $20 fee). The first room we got was a smoking one, when we went down to ask for a different one they said they didn't have any other rooms, after we insisted that we payed for a non smoking room, a free room suddenly appeared.

The second room was a non smoking room to our relief. The shower was very unappealing and I did not use it. the window was made of two completely transparent plastic pieces that you can "slide" to open. If you like your privacy, hope nobody on the street is looking at you, because there are no blinds.

Later that night I also discovered that there wasn't a lock for the entrance door, so I ended up putting a bunch of furniture in front of the door to block it from the outside.

the chair and carpet in the room were pretty dirty, and the covers on my bed had at least 5 cigarette holes.

The internet didn't work either.

As much as we didn't like it there, it wasn't a nightmare. The mattresses were comfertable enough to sleep on, the heater worked fine, and the toilet and sink looked new and looked clean.

“Rooms for short stays”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2008

My GF and I had a little meet here for some afternoon fun and we found it was okay for a few hours as long as your not spending the night.

The rooms aare old and some stuff doesn't work like others posted said and the desk clerk is a jerk. The office smells like a cheap Chinese eatery and the clerk is rude and barley intelligible. The clientele seem to mind their own business and it was quiet for our brief stay.

I wouldn't recommend it for a family trip, or for seniors because we made sure we left before dark ourselves because the place looks like it could be a real nightmare in the dark hours.

  • Liked — Nobody bothered us
  • Disliked — The desk clerk was an asshole

“Warning, do not stay here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2007

This was advertised as a one-star motel on Priceline. We did not expect much, but we do not think it deserves even one star.
What was wrong: difficult communication; English was limited, but the manager could speak well enough to check us in & answer some questions.
Safety issues: a support pole for one of the stair landings had been run into by a car, & did not look like it was safely supporting the landing. There was a police chase through the parking lot.
Repair issues: leak under bathroom sink; looked like it had been there a while & had caused some damage (when owner told of this, did not appear to be concerned), drawers under TV difficult to pull open & use, refridgerator ground prong on plug missing, leak on shower head, & TV did not work. Also, heater outside air vent "latch" broken. Small holes in sheets, bedspreads & drapes. Floor very creaky.
Cleanliness: Dried grease & piece of pizza in bottom drawer of TV cabinet; verbal & 2 written requests to clean out drawers were not honored, other shelves & drawers not fully cleaned, lots of mildew on windows in bathroom & bedroom, closet very musty smelling (& no hangers). Old paint drips on heater/air conditioner unit.
No internet as advertised.
What was ok: clean sheets, bedspread & towels (mattress pads too small). Decent pillows. Plenty of hot water; cold water tasted good to drink. Door deadbolt lock worked (difficult to close door from the outside). Room was quiet; view of end of Lake Merrit. It was a non-smoking room & did not smell of smoke (although there was an ashtray on the closet shelf).

  • Liked — Convenient location for our needs.
  • Disliked — Safety & cleanliness concerns.

“Run, Run Fast”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2007

We recently moved our daughter up near UC Berkeley and needed to find a hotel near Lake Merritt. This was the closest one near her home and we didnt expect the Hilton for 55 bucks a night, but what we got was FAR WORSE than ever expected!
The desk clerk said each room had a mini fridge and air conditioner. WRONG We were switched 3 rooms and each one had a non working fridge, and the smell was foul. The room which we were stuck on didnt even have a shower door. The toilet seat, not the cover, the actual seat was cracked in half. And the lamps on the bedside table, lets just say only one worked and the other side of the bed had one, but no plug to plug in??? We even pulled the bed out away from wall and nothing!
We slept there one night and about 5 am there was a gunshot outside the hotel. That was my breaking point.
We checked out and asked for a refund on the unused night, only to have the clerk PRETEND not to speak english! And I say pretend because this was the same man who we checked in with the day prior and talked too 3 times about the fridge's not working.
Like I said I didnt expect too much for 55 bucks a night, but avoid this place for your own safety!
