Saw the 1968 show here and it was fantastic! This museum never disappoints in the way that it creates an engrossing and interactive experience that really brings history to life. Very nice staff and a great thing to check out if you're in the area.
Both the art collection and the history section are excellent (the natural history section was being renovated when I visited). There is a nice variety of art with an emphasis on California artists. The space is well designed and uncrowded. The history section really fascinating and covers from the native residents through to modern times. There are many hands on elements that children will enjoy. This museum is a real gem and worth a visit. Two or three hours should be allowed to enjoy things thoroughly.
Visited the museum during a special teacher event to view the dia de los muertos altar exhibits...really enjoyed them, as well as everything else the museum has to offer.
We saw the very excellent ' 1968 ' exhibition on a recent sunday afternoon.
We lockerd our bikes to the public lock stand adjacent to the Museum entrance on Oak st.
Upon our return the bikes were gone.. $ 2000 lost.
WARNING- DO NOT lock your bikes on the street , ask the Museum for secure locked parking for your bike in their garage.
The museum should have ample warning at the entrance ticket counter that bikes are not safe .
It has a small but very credible collections of mostly northern California artists, arts and crafts movement - Oct has an amazing Day of the Dead exhibit. there is also a history section ranging from gold rush icons to interactive tech exhibits plus some interesting natural history sections. Nice cafe for lunch and parking garage or street parking.
