I stayed with a friend who knows the Bay area well from living in Oakland and going through the process of buying a house in Noe Valley so I had a whirlwind tour of food and drink all the way from these two different places, Tamarindo being the best of the bunch in Oakland. Lucky me, since this first Oakland visit, I’ve returned to this beautiful part of the country twice but unfortunately haven’t returned to Tamarindo yet. However I already have plans to return to the restaurant on an upcoming visit; it’s that memorable.
First, it’s decorated really nice and has a good vibe – romantic but also modern. Just as likely as you were to see couples there, there were huge groups of friends having a great time, so the place is caters to different needs. I didn’t like waiting in line for the bathroom (as there was only one) but that was a minor issue in an otherwise perfect evening.
As for the food, it exceeded my expectations. My mojitos were excellent and the food was too. The queso fundido and the guacamole are what everyone raves about, and for good reason. The guacamole, which comes in a really long bowl, is a very substantial serving. The chillaquilles were also excellent and when combined with the apps were plenty for a meal for me. My friend also loved his meal: he got the mole for the main course, and I didn’t try any but he said it was the best he’s had, so I’ll take his word for it.
We didn’t try dessert but shared a so-so piece of pie at the Irish pub down the street from the restaurant whose name I can’t remember. This pub was also a nice place to check out, especially if you’re interested in a huge beer selection, and although the atmosphere wasn’t as romantic as Tamarindo it was a good change of scenery nonetheless. And note: the jukebox will take your money without playing your selections!
