“At Least Three Stars”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2012

You can't go wrong selecting Mezze for those special occasion dinners. The menu encompasses a wide variety of dishes, including pizze, Moroccan lamb tagine, housemade gnocchi with pulled duck confit, coriander-crusted ahi tuna, gourmet hamburgers, wood-oven roasted chicken, Catalan Suquet (seafood stew) and “spaghetti squash pasta” among many other choices. I have tried them all and they are all good. Every night, they offer a three-course prix-fixe menu for ($22.95) with a choice of soup or salad, entrée and dessert.
I can walk to this restaurant from my house. But, would suggest that you make the effort to try Mezze even if you have to use your car to get there.

“Love this little family place and highly recommend it.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2012

There are usually specials and three course meal options. Very lovely service and it is a great all around neighborhood restaurant. I haven't had a bad dish here.

“Always delicious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

Mezze is one of our local favorites. We can walk from our home. The pizza and appetizers are excellent and wonderful with a drink. For a full dinner try the FABULOUS Chicken. I think it's the best in Oakland. Maurice is the perfect host and always makes your feel welcome whether we've been in recently or time has elapsed. This restaurant is good for a special occasion or simply to drop in on a Tuesday for an easy meal.

“Average food, confused service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2010

We bought a Groupon for this restaurant despite my girlfriend's instistance that "just because it's cheap, doesn't mean it's a good value." Much as it pains me to admit it, she was right. We joined another couple there and although our table was ready before our reservation (nice), that was where the experience exceeding our expectations ended. Both the server and bus staff were just "a little off" in their service delivery despite the fact we were one of 4 tables occupied in the establishment. They presented awkwardly and interrupted in the middle of discussions. We ordered the cheese plate (which was pretty good and delivered right away) and then the server came by after we had demolished it to tell us what everything was. She told us certain things were out of stock before we ordered, so we took that into account and requested something different, only to be told that some of those items were unavailable too. Main courses were pretty good. I had the Risotto and my gf had the steak (as part of prix fixe menu). Both were presented nicely and portions were generous, but I got the feeling the chef was trying just a little too hard with the flavor mixtures. We also got "Creme Brulle" which gave new meaning to creme as it was like soup. Almost seemed like it had been sitting out for a while. While we were enjoying some after dinner conversation, server came by to ask "if we needed anything else" in an obvious attempt to get rid of us (lights had been turned off in the back of the room), but she hadn't brought the check yet! Price was $155 for 4 with one drink each. Might be worth it with some better wait staff and quality of food being focused on a little more than quantity.

“Loved this place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2010

We were in Berkeley for the weekend, and received lots of good recommendations for dinner places in Oakland, but most were not open Sunday evening. Mezze had good TA reviews, so we tried it. It's in a charming neighborhood near Lake Merritt, and we saw lots of locals going there. Our server was a friendly young woman, and the owner was sitting at the bar with a local patron. We sat at the window which was totally open to the summer evening, very nice and relaxing. I ordered the roasted pepper and tomato soup, which was delicious, but fairly filling. Watch out! Next, I had the lamb sausage pizza, which was excellent, crisp flat crust, lots of mint, great! My hubby had a nice green salad just lightly dressed, perfect as a starter, and then he had the duck breast entree, which he loved, loved, loved. Wines by the glass are interesting and well priced. This is a perfect relaxing neighborhood restaurant. Who needs the snooty reservations policies of a place like Commis?
