“A place to wander and ponder ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

I am not a regular at cemeteries, but Mountain View Cemetery is so inviting and interesting that I walk there ... and have even taken young creative writing students there for a field trip! It is the las home to many of the biggest family names in California history, but it is also personal. There is a section for babies that will break your heart. The tombstones of in the Jewish section and the many Asian inscriptions are striking. As one walks through, one is aware of Oakland's long history as a city where peoples from all over the world are neighbors. Just outside the wrought-iron gates is a Columbarium designed by the famed Bay Area architect, Julia Morgan. Drop in there for still more quiet time in a beautiful setting. Then, leave, walk down Piedmont Avenue and enjoy one of the fine restaurants you'll find. It's good to be alive!

“History of Oakland Comes Alive!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

As far as cemeteries go, this one is a classic. A great place to understand the history of Oakland, since it was opened in 1863. It has an entire section surrounded by cannonballs of Civil War veterans. Then there is the grave of the man who believed in tee-totalling and no alcohol who provided large fresh water fountains in major cities across America. There is an entire section called "Millionaires Row" where the rich (or better, their visitors) enjoy the best view in the cemetery. It is a delightful 200-acre place to come and rest and reflect on the deeper issues of life. The Memorial Day services here draw a thousand people and feature tours of the gravesites.

“The Most Beautiful Cemetery in California”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Sweeping views of San Francisco and the Bay. Rolling hills. Historic markers from the Civil War. Famous people -- Julia Morgan, Kraft, Crocker, Ghiradelli -- buried here. Brilliant spring display of tulips, rhondodendrons and lilac.

“Take a guided tour if you can”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

The stories of the cemetery and the folks buried there are quite interesting, and with a guided tour you learn about things you would otherwise perhaps walk by and miss. Like the Civil War burial area, ringed by Civil War-era cannonballs, or the grave markers shaped like logs that indicate a Forester (not the car) is buried there.

And on a nice day it is a peaceful and beautiful place to walk.
