“A Plum Perfect Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012

For our anniversary we booked a table via OpenTable at this small plate establishment in downtown Oakland. From the moment we walked in the door to the moment our server Amanda chased us down the street with our bag of leftovers, we had a first class experience. Brenden, the manager, immediately made us feel special with his big welcome while Amanda presented us with a complimentary glass of bubbly! “We take celebrations seriously” she commented. The food is original and delicious. We started with the Monterey squid annatto, baby corn, and pickled potato along with the pork & bourbon hazelnut with apples and smoked mustard followed by the creamy avocado risotto with pistachio, lemon, and cucumber ribbons. . For our main courses we enjoyed the whole hog and the bavette quinoa with smoked carrot. Everything was simply delicious. Although the portions are not large, we still needed to ask for a take-out bag. For dessert, we recommend the profiteroles with plums which is just sweet enough to finish with a lovely glass of muscato.

The service was impeccable, professional, friendly, and very endearing. They made sure we celebrated a very lovely evening. We will definitely return and heartily encourage anyone to visit. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food, presentation, and attentiveness.

Note that you may not see the name of the restaurant nor the address from the street. Because it is an historic building, we were told by Brendon that they can’t do anything with the exterior which resembles a vacant office. Know that it is located across the street from Pican on a corner triangle off Broadway. Parking is available on side streets. The interior of the restaurant is hip and modern. Wooden tables are placed very close to one another to invite conversation with your neighbor. We did indeed talk with ours. The wooden chairs are hard and not comfortable, however, the ambiance, food, and charming wait staff are so superb that you won’t notice! Our thanks to Amanda and Brendon for a thoroughly enjoyable experience . Go visit and tell them the anniversary couple sent you.
Savor your celebration and be the STAR you are!

“A cozy atmosphere and organic foods make this restaurant a memorable experience.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

Begin with the peach, fennel, olive, trumpet, porcini appetizer, which is a culinary delight. A blend of unique tastes that this opening dish provides, begins an epicurean experience. All farm-raised or ecologically based foods grace the menu. Although the portions seem small, they provide just enough to satisfy the stomach and the taste buds. Be aware, that due to the size of the restaurant, seating is very limited and reservations are a must.

“Culinary Theater”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

Sitting at the bar overlooking the small spotless kitchen allows you to watch your very meal prepared by extremely meticulous and creative chefs/cooks. Every phase of the dining experience is personal with a sense of genuine dedication to your satisfaction. You will not only be pleased by whatever you select but also be able to note the pleasure of the staff in having pleased you. The food is excellent. The presentation is excellent. The whole experience is excellent from start to finish. Sit at the bar if at all possible.

“Inventive food, great service, great cocktails”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

The menu is very eclectic and inventive. It consists of a number of small plates and a few larger plates. The large plates we chose included the Fried Duck Egg (duck confit and the lamb, herb cavatelli, shallots) and the lamb mole spaetzel. The small plates we tried were all good and interesting. The beet boudin noir - with brussel sprouts and turnip - was one of the best dishes we have had recently. The cauliflower (bulger, date, harissa) was also excellent- who woulda thought? our desserts were a tiramisu and brioche - good but not spectacular. Excellent cocktail menu and a short but pretty inclusive wine list. Service was great but the pace was relaxed. There is an excellent Chef's counter for watching the kitchen activity.

“I'd rather give this place 3.5 stars=good, because it is above avg, but not very good.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

I don't like it when a waiter says "you're welcome" to me before I've had a chance to say thank you, because he is on auto pilot. On to the review....

The food is actually very good so kudos to the chef and cooks. We had the salmon, duck egg, pork belly, cauliflower side and cheese plate. All delicious but portions are fairly on the small side-beautifully presented, however. Also delicious is the gin grapefruit gimlet!!

There is Plum Bar next to the restaurant and I think it's probably more reasonably priced. My salmon entree was about $25 and it was like a quarter of a filet I am used to getting for that price at other good restaurants.

I am going to try Plum Bar next before I rule out this place completely as a place I'd return.
