“Updated rooms centrally located”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2012

Very comfortable rooms that have recently been updated which made for a good deal. Only a block away from Bart, this hotel is 10 minutes from downtown SF. Great asian restaurants all around especially for dim sum in chinatown. If you want an affordable place but updated place to stay that is quiet and clean then this is perfect. Nothing fancy but more than what you might expect for the price and a Clarion property. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the elevator in the back of the building.

For the price ($100 on a Saturday night), this place was great. The room was tiny, but everything was clean and the bathroom looked newly renovated. The front desk staff was very friendly. The neighborhood is, well, downtown Oakland. When we were parking our car (on the street) late on Saturday night, we overheard a group of people talking about their car getting broken into while it was parked in the open lot next door. Very convenient location. The bed was more comfortable than I expected, even for two people. Our bathroom was nowhere NEAR the size of the one in the photo above though.

Location is actually quite convenient, just a bit depressing, as others have noticed. I have stayed here three times since 2009 and have never been dismayed or disappointed by the room itself. Rooms are always comfortable and quiet, a surprise given the urban environment outside. Street noise is rarely heard. Yes, the carpeting, furniture, and wall paint can use updating, but the plumbing fixtures are new, clean, and fully functional. Staff have been polite and friendly. One could wish for a refrigerator (there is space in the dresser/television cabinet for it) and for wi-fi in the rooms (there is wired internet in the rooms, and wi-fi in the lobby), but it is a bargain for the Bay Area, and convenient for transport from either Oakland Airport or SFO (as long as BART is running!). The management at the restaurant has recently changed, and the Middle Eastern offerings on the menu have been expanded. It is a two-person operation, however, so service can be slow (though very friendly) if more than a couple of diners appear at same time. I would recommend without hesitation; just have your wits about you when you go outside, especially in the evenings. The hotel is walking distance to Chinatown and to some decent Japanese and Vietnamese restaurants in the 15th-17th St. area; the "freeB" Broadway shuttle is just two blocks away (as are many other bus lines) and can expand your dining choices by taking you to Jack London Square and elsewhere; it runs until 7 pm on weeknights and much later on weekends.

Oakland’s Clarion Hotel start’s with a number of disadvantages. The immediate neighborhood is bleak and scary, the province of the homeless and street thugs. The property itself is not conducive to the hotel trade, with tiny, cramped, odd-shaped rooms, some of which can’t accommodate basics most travelers expect (such as a dresser with drawers).

All this could be at least partly offset by a conscientious management that cares about the quality of guests’ experiences, not to mention their safety and well-being. Based on my recent experience, this, too, is absent from the Clarion Oakland.

There were small signs and big ones. The small signs included poorly maintained common areas, indifferent housekeeping and a front desk staff alternately contemptuous or clueless. The big sign was the elevator that broke down on the second day of my five-day business stay and remained inoperative when I checked out this morning. Other than a terse sign taped to the elevator doors, no effort was made to communicate reason or repair status to guests. No apologetic, here’s-what-we’re-doing-to-fix-it-note slipped under the door, no evident sense of urgency in getting the sole elevator in a seven-story hotel up and running again. All the folks at the desk knew was that it involved a part, it had been ordered, and arrival date remains unknown. Staff communication is so bad that one hapless clerk didn’t know the elevator had been out two days until a guest informed him.

Things happen, parts fail, elevators break down. But when it happens in a hotel, you move fast to get it fixed and keep your guests informed, or allow them to conclude that you are indifferent to their safety and comfort. The current management of Oakland’s Clarion Hotel fails this basic standard of competence. I won’t patronize them again and my suggestion to anyone contemplating staying there is to forget about it. Clarion should be embarrassed to have their badge on such a poorly-run place.

Ugh...where do I start? The room had a terrible old musty smell, the carpet was moist when I stepped out of bed, the heater did not work and I had to walk downstairs to get the check-in person to come fix it. The TV was miniscule and had no cable. The internet was wired only. The elevator was broken on the last day and I had to hear the clunk of luggage on the stairway as people dragged their luggage down 7 flights of stairs. There is no parking. I asked where to park and was directed to the street. I was not warned that my car would be covered with caked on bird droppngs in the morning. I had to pay the guy in the parking lot next door 10 bucks to wash my car. The walls are paper thin and I could hear vacuuming in the hall in the mornings. The neighborhood us nasty and ghetto and the furnishings old. The carpet is stained and the lobby is just a wooden counter in front of the elevator and stairs. I wanted to leave the minute I hit the lobby and it only got worse from there. Not cheap either. Would not stay EVER again.

I spent one night here and would recommend it to anyone who
1. has to within blocks of the 12th Street Bart Station, The Oakland California Museum, the Oakland Tribune, or the Fox Theater
2. does not mind a tiny, nearly windowless room for a very short stay
3. needs to spend as little money as possible on lodging
Please note: The newly established middle eastern cafe in the building is friendly and good. Try the shish kabob! I appreciated the fact that this hotel is indeed a welcoming, clean, quiet, up-to-date, smoke-free place to sleep. It's the neighborhood...in every direction... that was depressing, even a bit frightening, for a single traveler navigating on foot alone.

I loved this place! People were friendly and helpful. Room was clean, bed comfy, nice sheets.

Super close to BART.

Lots of restaurants nearby. (Loved the Shishkabob placed attached and Spices 3 Chinese on Webster a block and a half away).

Note, if you like your rooms like most Americans like their meals - large and full of cheap crap, this is not the place for you. The room is small as in efficient - has a queen bed, two bedside tables, a dresser, flat screen TV, closet, good size bathroom.

It's located in the heart of a major city, so I am always aware of my surroundings. Aware enough to notice a lot of stooped-over grannies out wakling, too.
